After receiving your Pokedex and Poké Balls from Professor Birch, head north from Oldale Town onto Route 103. Your rival, May or Brendan, will be waiting for you. This is your first official trainer battle! Your rival will have the starter Pokémon that has a type advantage over yours. For example, if you chose Treecko, they will have Torchic. If you chose Torchic, they will have Mudkip. If you chose Mudkip, they will have Treecko. Use your starter's STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) moves to deal significant damage. Don't be afraid to use Potions if your Pokémon's HP gets low. Winning this battle will earn you some experience points and money, and your rival will return to Littleroot Town. This battle serves as a good introduction to trainer battles and type matchups.
