Pokémon Abilities List & Effects
Pokémon Abilities are passive skills that provide various benefits in battle, ranging from stat boosts to status condition immunities, and even environmental effects. Understanding and utilizing these abilities is crucial for building a strong team and mastering the competitive scene in Galar. Every Pokémon has at least one ability, and some have a hidden ability that can be more powerful or offer unique strategic options.
This comprehensive guide will break down key abilities, their effects, and how to best leverage them in your journey through the Galar region. We'll also cover how to identify and even change abilities for your Pokémon.
Understanding Ability Types
Abilities generally fall into a few categories:
- Battle-Oriented Abilities: These directly impact combat, such as increasing stats, negating damage, or altering move effects. Examples include Intimidate, Speed Boost, and Levitate.
- Status-Oriented Abilities: These provide immunity or special reactions to status conditions like Poison, Paralysis, or Sleep. Immunity and Synchronize are good examples.
- Field Abilities: While less common in Sword & Shield compared to previous generations, some abilities can still affect the overworld or how you encounter Pokémon, though most are now battle-focused.
Key Abilities and Strategic Applications
Here's a detailed look at some of the most impactful abilities you'll encounter and how to use them effectively:
Offensive Abilities
- Strong Jaw: Boosts the power of biting moves by 50%.
- Pokémon with Strong Jaw: Drednaw, Barraskewda.
- Strategy: Pair with moves like Crunch, Ice Fang, or Psychic Fangs for massive damage. Drednaw, found commonly in the Wild Area (e.g., Dappled Grove, Galar Mine No. 2), benefits greatly from this.
- Mold Breaker: Ignores the target's ability.
- Pokémon with Mold Breaker: Excadrill, Haxorus.
- Strategy: Essential for bypassing abilities like Levitate (allowing Ground-type moves to hit Flying-types) or Sturdy (preventing one-hit KOs). Excadrill, evolving from Drilbur (Route 3, Galar Mine), is a prime candidate for this.
- Guts: Increases Attack by 50% when the Pokémon has a status condition (Burn, Poison, Paralysis, Sleep, Freeze).
- Pokémon with Guts: Conkeldurr, Ursaring.
- Strategy: Combine with a held item like a Toxic Orb or Flame Orb to intentionally inflict a status condition at the start of battle, immediately boosting your Attack. Be mindful of the HP drain from Poison/Burn.
Defensive Abilities
- Intimidate: Lowers the opponent's Attack stat by one stage upon entering battle.
- Pokémon with Intimidate: Arcanine, Gyarados, Corviknight.
- Strategy: Excellent for weakening physical attackers and allowing your Pokémon to take hits more easily. Switching between multiple Intimidate users can repeatedly lower an opponent's Attack. Corviknight, evolving from Rookidee (Route 1, Slumbering Weald), is a staple for this.
- Levitate: Grants immunity to Ground-type moves.
- Pokémon with Levitate: Mismagius, Weezing (Galarian Form).
- Strategy: Crucial for avoiding super-effective Ground-type attacks, especially for Pokémon that would otherwise be weak to them. Galarian Weezing, found in the Wild Area (e.g., Giant's Cap, Lake of Outrage), leverages this well.
- Sturdy: Prevents the Pokémon from being knocked out in one hit if its HP is full.
- Pokémon with Sturdy: Skarmory, Donphan.
- Strategy: Guarantees at least one turn of action, allowing for a crucial attack, status move, or setting up entry hazards like Stealth Rock.
Utility Abilities
- Speed Boost: Raises the Pokémon's Speed stat by one stage at the end of each turn.
- Pokémon with Speed Boost: Blaziken (via Home), Ninjask.
- Strategy: Allows a Pokémon to become incredibly fast over time, often outspeeding opponents after a few turns. Ninjask, evolving from Nincada (Route 5), is a classic user.
- Synchronize: If the Pokémon is inflicted with a status condition (Poison, Paralysis, Burn), the opponent also receives that status condition.
- Pokémon with Synchronize: Gardevoir, Espeon.
- Strategy: Useful for punishing opponents who try to inflict status on your Pokémon. Also incredibly valuable for Shiny Hunting or finding Pokémon with specific Natures, as a Synchronize Pokémon at the front of your party has a 50% chance of attracting wild Pokémon with the same Nature.
Identifying and Changing Abilities
You can check a Pokémon's ability on its summary screen. Simply navigate to the Pokémon in your party or PC, select "Check Summary," and scroll to the second page. The ability will be listed there.
Ability Capsule
For Pokémon with multiple standard abilities, you can use an Ability Capsule to switch between them. This item is invaluable for optimizing your team without needing to catch or breed a new Pokémon.
- Location: The Ability Capsule can be purchased from the Battle Tower for 50 Battle Points (BP). You'll unlock the Battle Tower after completing the main story and becoming the Champion.
- How to Use: Select the Ability Capsule from your Bag and choose the Pokémon whose ability you wish to change. It will present you with the available standard abilities to switch to.
Ability Patch (Hidden Abilities)
Some Pokémon have a special "Hidden Ability" that is often more powerful or strategically unique than their standard abilities. These are typically harder to obtain. The Ability Patch is a rare item that allows you to change a Pokémon's standard ability to its Hidden Ability.
- Location: The Ability Patch is a very rare drop from Max Raid Battles in the Crown Tundra DLC, specifically from 5-star and 4-star Dynamax Adventures. It can also be purchased from the Cram-o-matic in the Isle of Armor DLC using specific combinations of items, or from the Watt Trader in the Crown Tundra for 200 Dynite Ore.
- How to Use: Similar to the Ability Capsule, select the Ability Patch from your Bag and apply it to the desired Pokémon. This will permanently change its ability to its Hidden Ability.
Mastering Pokémon abilities is a cornerstone of competitive play and a significant factor in your success throughout the Galar region. Experiment with different combinations and find the abilities that best suit your playstyle!
