Chell is the silent protagonist of Portal. She is a test subject at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Her defining characteristic is her resilience and determination, as she continuously pushes through GLaDOS's increasingly dangerous test chambers. Chell never speaks, allowing players to project themselves into her role. Her 'abilities' are entirely tied to the Portal Gun and her physical capabilities: jumping, crouching, and sprinting. There are no upgrades or character progression for Chell herself; her strength lies in the player's ingenuity. Her backstory is largely a mystery within the first game, adding to the enigmatic atmosphere of the facility. She is the embodiment of the player's will to survive and escape.
