Troubleshooting
Even the most brilliant test subjects can encounter unexpected obstacles. This section addresses common sticking points and provides detailed solutions to get you back on track and through Aperture Science's rigorous testing.
Stuck on Test Chamber 02: The First Cube
Many players find themselves initially confused by the mechanics of the Weighted Storage Cube. If you're having trouble activating the Button:
- Problem: The Button isn't activating, or the door isn't opening.
- Solution: You need to place the Weighted Storage Cube directly onto the Button.
- Walkthrough:
- Locate the Weighted Storage Cube dispenser. It's usually a small, glowing panel on a wall.
- Shoot a blue portal onto the wall next to the dispenser.
- Shoot an orange portal onto the floor near the Button.
- Press the button on the dispenser to release a cube. It will fall through your portals.
- Once the cube is on the floor near the button, carefully pick it up (use the 'E' key by default).
- Walk over to the Button and drop the cube directly onto its surface. The button should depress, and the door will open.
Navigating Test Chamber 15: The Moving Platforms
Test Chamber 15 introduces dynamic elements that can be tricky. If you're struggling with the moving platforms or reaching the exit:
- Problem: Can't reach the upper platform or the exit door. The moving platforms seem to be out of sync.
- Solution: You need to use the moving platforms to your advantage, often by placing portals on them as they move into position. Timing is crucial here.
- Walkthrough:
- Initial Ascent: From the starting platform, look across to the first moving platform. Wait for it to come into a position where you can easily place a portal on its surface.
- Place a blue portal on the wall directly above your starting position.
- As the first moving platform moves into a reachable position, place an orange portal on its top surface. Walk through your blue portal to land on the moving platform.
- Reaching the Next Level: Once on the first moving platform, ride it until you are aligned with the next stationary ledge. You might need to place a new portal on a wall or the ceiling to gain height or distance.
- Look for a wall or ceiling surface that will allow you to place a portal to reach the higher ground. Often, there's a wall panel that moves into view.
- The Final Gap: The biggest challenge is often the final jump to the exit. You'll need to use the momentum of a moving platform.
- Identify the final moving platform that will take you to the exit.
- Place a blue portal on the wall near the exit door.
- As the final moving platform approaches a point where you can gain momentum, place an orange portal on its top surface.
- Jump through your blue portal. The momentum from the moving platform should propel you across the gap to the exit. If you miss, adjust your portal placement or timing.
Dealing with Turrets: Test Chamber 16 and Beyond
Turrets are a new threat starting in Test Chamber 16. If you're getting shredded by their laser sights:
- Problem: Turrets are firing relentlessly, and you can't get past them.
- Solution: Turrets are vulnerable when they fall over. Use portals to knock them down or redirect their fire.
- Strategies:
- Direct Knockdown:
- Identify a wall or ceiling surface directly above or beside the turret.
- Place a blue portal on a safe wall near you.
- Place an orange portal on the surface you identified above the turret.
- Look for a Weighted Storage Cube or another object you can push through your portals.
- Push the object through your blue portal. It will fall out of the orange portal, landing on and knocking over the turret.
- Once a turret is on its side, it's harmless.
- Environmental Hazards:
Sometimes, the environment itself can be used. In Test Chamber 16, there are often gaps or pits. If you can portal a turret into one of these, it's permanently disabled.
- Place a blue portal on a wall near the turret.
- Place an orange portal over a pit or a dangerous area.
- Shoot the turret with your portal gun (it won't damage it, but it might distract it briefly) or try to get close enough to pick it up (risky!).
- The ideal method is to use another object to push it through your portal.
- Portal Redirect:
If you're facing multiple turrets, you can sometimes use portals to make them shoot each other.
- Place a blue portal on a wall near one turret.
- Place an orange portal on a wall or surface that another turret is facing.
- When the first turret fires, its bullets will come out of the orange portal, potentially hitting the second turret. This will cause them to engage each other.
- Direct Knockdown:
The Companion Cube: Test Chamber 17
The Companion Cube is essential for progression in Test Chamber 17. If you've lost it or can't figure out its purpose:
- Problem: Can't find the Companion Cube, or the door isn't opening.
- Solution: The Weighted Companion Cube functions exactly like a regular Weighted Storage Cube for activating buttons, but it's unique and often critical for specific puzzles.
- Walkthrough:
- Retrieving the Cube: The Weighted Companion Cube is typically dispensed from a specific panel, much like regular cubes. If you've lost it, you might need to backtrack or look for its dispenser. In Test Chamber 17, it's usually presented to you early on.
- Activating the Button: The primary use of the Companion Cube is to activate a Button. Locate the button that opens the exit or a path forward.
- Pick up the Weighted Companion Cube (default 'E' key).
- Place the cube directly onto the Button. The button will depress, and the associated door or mechanism will activate.
- Remember: In Test Chamber 17, you will eventually be forced to dispose of the Companion Cube. This is part of the test and unavoidable. Do not try to save it beyond its intended purpose for activating the final button.
