Environmental Hazards & Traps
The decaying environments of Post Trauma are as dangerous as the creatures that stalk them. Understanding and navigating these hazards is crucial for survival. Many traps are designed to punish carelessness, while others require specific items or careful observation to bypass.
I. Environmental Hazards
These are static dangers inherent to the environment itself, often requiring a specific approach or item to mitigate.
A. Corrosive Pools
These viscous, glowing pools of unknown origin are common in the lower levels of the Abandoned Research Facility and the Subterranean Tunnels. Contact with these pools results in rapid health degradation.
- Identification: Look for a sickly green or orange luminescence, often accompanied by a low, bubbling sound. The air around them may shimmer slightly.
- Strategy:
- Avoidance: Whenever possible, find alternate paths. Many areas with corrosive pools have narrow ledges or debris piles that can be used to cross.
- Protective Gear: In the Abandoned Research Facility, you will eventually find the Reinforced Rubber Boots in the Decontamination Chamber A. These boots provide temporary immunity to corrosive damage, allowing you to walk through shallow pools without harm. Note that deeper pools will still inflict damage, albeit at a reduced rate.
- Timing: Some corrosive pools are intermittent, receding and flowing with a strange rhythm. Observe their patterns and sprint across when the path is clear. This is particularly prevalent in the Flooded Maintenance Sector.
- Item Location: Reinforced Rubber Boots - Found on a workbench in the Decontamination Chamber A, accessible after restoring power to the sector.
B. Collapsing Floors & Ceilings
Structural integrity is a luxury in Post Trauma. Many areas feature weakened floors or unstable ceilings that can give way without warning.
- Identification:
- Floors: Look for cracked tiles, splintered wood, or visibly sagging sections. Dust and small debris falling from above can also indicate a weak spot.
- Ceilings: Large cracks, exposed rebar, or dripping fluids (not water) are strong indicators. Listen for creaking sounds.
- Strategy:
- Slow Movement: Walk, do not run, across suspicious flooring. This often triggers a slower collapse animation, giving you a chance to react and jump to solid ground.
- Environmental Cues: Pay attention to the environment. If a creature bursts through a wall or ceiling nearby, it's a good sign that other sections are equally fragile.
- Triggering Remotely: In some instances, you can use a thrown Empty Bottle or a shot from your Rusty Revolver to trigger a collapse from a safe distance, clearing a path or eliminating a lurking enemy below. This is particularly useful in the Collapsed Office Block.
- Key Areas: The Upper Residential Floors are notorious for collapsing floors, often leading to unexpected drops into lower, monster-filled areas.
C. Toxic Gas Vents
These vents release clouds of noxious gas that quickly obscure vision and inflict poison damage.
- Identification: Hissing sounds, visible green or yellow gas clouds, and often a faint, acrid smell (though this is more for immersion than a gameplay cue).
- Strategy:
- Hold Breath: While not a permanent solution, holding your breath (default key: Shift) can temporarily reduce the rate of poison damage. However, your stamina will deplete rapidly.
- Gas Mask: The most effective countermeasure is the Industrial Gas Mask. Equipping this item renders you immune to the gas's effects and allows you to navigate these areas safely.
- Valve Manipulation: Many gas vents are connected to nearby valves. Locating and turning the Pressure Release Valve will often shut off the gas flow, permanently clearing the hazard. These valves are usually found on adjacent walls or within small maintenance alcoves.
- Item Location: The Industrial Gas Mask is located in the Ventilation Control Room on the Lower Service Deck. You'll need the Control Room Keycard to access this area.
II. Traps
These are deliberately placed dangers, often requiring disarming or a specific sequence of actions to bypass.
A. Tripwire Alarms
Simple but effective, these wires are strung across doorways or narrow corridors, triggering loud alarms that attract nearby enemies.
- Identification: Look closely at floor level. The tripwires are thin, metallic strands, often glinting faintly under your flashlight. They are usually placed about ankle height.
- Strategy:
- Crouch: The simplest method is to crouch (default key: C) and slowly move over the tripwire. This requires careful positioning.
- Disarm: With a pair of Wire Cutters, you can interact with the tripwire to disarm it silently. This is the preferred method for stealthy approaches.
- Trigger and Flee: If you're prepared for a fight or need to lure enemies, intentionally triggering the alarm can be a viable (though risky) strategy.
- Item Location: Wire Cutters are found in the Janitor's Closet on the Ground Floor of the Residential Block, behind a locked door that requires the Janitor's Key.
B. Pressure Plate Traps
These floor-mounted plates trigger various hazards, from falling debris to dart launchers.
- Identification: Pressure plates are usually slightly discolored sections of the floor, often with a subtle outline or a different texture. They can be difficult to spot in dimly lit areas. Use your Flashlight liberally.
- Strategy:
- Observation: Before stepping on any suspicious floor tile, observe the surrounding area for potential hazards. Are there dart holes in the walls? Loose ceiling panels?
- Bypass: Often, there's a narrow path around the pressure plate. Sometimes, you can jump over them, but this requires precise timing and positioning.
- Weighted Objects: In some rare instances, you can place a heavy object (like a Crate or a Deactivated Security Bot) onto a pressure plate to hold it down, disabling the trap or opening a path. This is seen in the Ancient Archives.
- Key Areas: The Underground Catacombs are riddled with pressure plate traps that trigger poison dart launchers from the walls.
C. Proximity Mines
These devices emit a soft, pulsing light and detonate when an enemy (or you) gets too close.
- Identification: A small, metallic sphere with a blinking red light, often partially obscured by debris. They emit a faint, high-pitched whine that becomes louder as you approach.
- Strategy:
- Slow Approach: Move slowly and deliberately. Once you hear the whine, stop and locate the mine.
- Disarm: With the Multi-tool Kit, you can interact with the mine to disarm it safely. This requires a short mini-game where you match a sequence of button presses. Failure results in detonation.
- Trigger Remotely: If you lack the Multi-tool Kit or prefer a more aggressive approach, you can shoot the mine from a distance with your Rusty Revolver or throw an Empty Bottle at it to trigger its detonation. This can also be used to clear groups of enemies if timed correctly.
- Item Location: The Multi-tool Kit is a rare find, located in the Security Office Armory, which requires the Armory Access Card found in the Head Guard's Quarters.
Always proceed with caution in Post Trauma. The environment is often your greatest enemy, but with careful observation and the right tools, you can turn its dangers to your advantage.
