Understanding the Crafting System

Crafting in Post Trauma is a straightforward, menu-based system. Access your inventory (default key: 'I' on PC, 'Select' on console) and navigate to the 'Craft' tab. Here, you'll see a list of known recipes. Items can be combined by selecting the primary component and then choosing a compatible secondary component from your inventory. Successful combinations will yield a new item, often crucial for progression or survival.

Essential Crafting Recipes

Below are some of the most vital crafting recipes you'll discover early on. Prioritize gathering these components whenever possible.

  • Makeshift Bandage:
    • Components: 1x Torn Cloth + 1x Alcohol Wipes
    • Effect: Restores a small amount of health and stops minor bleeding.
    • Strategy: Torn Cloth is abundant, often found in abandoned apartments or on defeated humanoid enemies. Alcohol Wipes are scarcer, typically located in medical cabinets or first-aid kits. Always keep a few Makeshift Bandages on hand; they're your primary early-game healing item.
  • Crude Torch:
    • Components: 1x Wooden Stick + 1x Oily Rag
    • Effect: Provides temporary light, essential for navigating dark areas and deterring certain creatures.
    • Strategy: Wooden Sticks are common, found near broken furniture or in outdoor areas. Oily Rags are often found in workshops, garages, or near machinery. The Crude Torch has limited durability, so craft several if you anticipate extended periods in darkness, such as the Sub-Basement Maintenance Tunnels.
  • Improvised Lockpick:
    • Components: 1x Bent Wire + 1x Scrap Metal
    • Effect: Allows you to pick simple locks, opening new paths and revealing hidden stashes.
    • Strategy: Bent Wire can be found in discarded electronics or broken appliances. Scrap Metal is very common, often salvaged from debris piles or broken machinery. These are crucial for accessing areas like the Locked Storage Room in the Residential Block, which often contains valuable ammunition or healing items.
  • Basic Molotov:
    • Components: 1x Empty Bottle + 1x Kerosene + 1x Cloth Strip
    • Effect: Creates an area of effect fire attack, effective against groups of weaker enemies or specific larger threats.
    • Strategy: Empty Bottles are everywhere – check kitchens, bars, and garbage bins. Kerosene is rarer, usually found in fuel cans in garages or utility rooms. Cloth Strips can be crafted from Torn Cloth or found directly. The Basic Molotov is excellent for clearing out the Infested Corridor in the Hospital Wing.

Resource Locations and Scavenging Tips

Effective scavenging is key to maintaining a healthy supply of crafting materials. Here's where to look for common and rare resources:

  • Common Resources (Torn Cloth, Wooden Stick, Scrap Metal, Empty Bottle):
    • Locations: These are ubiquitous. Search every room, especially in residential areas, abandoned offices, and derelict industrial zones. Check drawers, cabinets, shelves, and even under beds.
    • Tip: Don't ignore seemingly empty rooms. Sometimes a crucial piece of Scrap Metal might be hidden behind a broken crate.
  • Uncommon Resources (Bent Wire, Oily Rag, Cloth Strip):
    • Locations: These require a bit more focused searching. Bent Wire is often in electronics shops or maintenance areas. Oily Rags are in workshops, garages, and near generators. Cloth Strips can be found in laundries or tailor shops, or crafted from Torn Cloth.
    • Tip: Pay attention to environmental clues. A workbench usually means a higher chance of finding an Oily Rag.
  • Rare Resources (Alcohol Wipes, Kerosene):
    • Locations: These are critical and should be conserved. Alcohol Wipes are almost exclusively found in medical facilities (e.g., the Hospital Wing, Doctor's Office) or in well-hidden first-aid kits. Kerosene is found in fuel depots, garages, or occasionally in utility closets within larger buildings.
    • Tip: Always prioritize opening locked containers or solving environmental puzzles that hint at valuable supplies. These often contain rare crafting components.

Advanced Crafting Considerations

As you progress, you'll uncover more complex recipes and encounter situations where crafting strategically can turn the tide:

  • Inventory Management: Your inventory space is limited. Prioritize carrying components for items you frequently use (e.g., Makeshift Bandages) or items needed for immediate progression (e.g., Improvised Lockpicks). Store excess components in safe zones or designated storage containers.
  • Recipe Discovery: Some recipes are learned automatically, while others require finding Crafting Manuals. These manuals are often hidden in secure locations or dropped by specific, tougher enemies. For instance, the recipe for the Enhanced Health Syringe is found in the Medical Research Lab.
  • Environmental Interaction: Certain crafting actions can only be performed at specific workstations. For example, repairing damaged weapons might require a Workbench, while distilling purified water might need a Water Purifier. Always check your surroundings for interactive objects.

Mastering crafting and resource management will significantly improve your chances of survival in Post Trauma. Stay vigilant, scavenge thoroughly, and always be prepared to combine what you find to overcome the challenges ahead.
