Stealth Mechanics
In the terrifying world of Post Trauma, direct confrontation is often a death sentence. Mastering stealth is not just an option, but a vital survival skill. This section will guide you through the intricacies of avoiding detection, utilizing the environment, and making silent progress through the game's most dangerous areas.
Understanding Enemy Perception
Creatures in Post Trauma rely on multiple senses to detect you. Understanding these is the first step to effective stealth:
- Sight: Most enemies have a cone of vision. Stay out of their direct line of sight. Pay attention to their patrol patterns and the direction they are facing. Shadows are your best friend here.
- Sound: Every step, every interaction, every dropped item can generate noise. Walking normally creates moderate sound, while sprinting is very loud. Crouching significantly reduces your sound footprint. Be mindful of environmental hazards that can create noise, such as broken glass or loose debris.
- Smell/Proximity: Some of the more grotesque entities may have an enhanced sense of smell or simply detect your presence when you are too close, regardless of sight or sound. This is less common but can occur with specific enemy types in certain areas.
Essential Stealth Techniques
Crouching and Movement
The fundamental stealth action is crouching. Press the designated crouch button (typically Left Ctrl on PC, B on Xbox, Circle on PlayStation) to enter a low-profile stance. While crouched:
- Your movement speed is reduced, but your noise generation is drastically cut.
- You are harder to spot, especially in tall grass or behind low cover.
- You can often squeeze through tight spaces that are otherwise inaccessible.
Combine crouching with careful observation of enemy patrol routes. Wait for enemies to turn their backs or move into a blind spot before advancing.
Utilizing Shadows and Cover
The environment is your greatest ally. Always seek out dark areas and objects to hide behind:
- Shadows: Moving through dimly lit or completely dark areas significantly reduces your visibility. If an enemy is looking directly at a shadowed area, they might still spot you if you're too close, but it's far less likely than in bright light.
- Environmental Cover: Use overturned furniture, crates, pillars, and doorways to break line of sight. Peek around corners by gently moving the camera or using a dedicated peek button (if available) to scout ahead without fully exposing yourself.
- Distraction: Sometimes, the best way to get past an enemy is to draw them away. Throwing a Empty Bottle (found commonly in residential areas and abandoned clinics) or a Loose Brick (often found near construction sites or crumbling walls) can create a noise that diverts an enemy's attention. Aim for a spot away from your intended path.
Advanced Stealth Strategies
Enemy Manipulation
Beyond simple distraction, you can sometimes manipulate enemy behavior for your advantage:
- Luring: If an enemy is blocking a crucial path, consider luring them into a different room or corridor using a thrown object. Once they investigate the noise, quickly move past their original position.
- Sound Traps: In some areas, you might find environmental elements that can be triggered to create noise, such as a falling stack of cans or a creaking floorboard. Use these to your advantage, but be careful not to fall into your own trap.
Resource Management for Stealth
While Post Trauma isn't a crafting game in the traditional sense, managing your stealth-related items is crucial:
- Flashlight Usage: Your Flashlight is invaluable for navigating dark areas, but its beam can easily give away your position. Use it sparingly in enemy-infested zones. Toggle it off when hiding or moving through areas where enemies are present.
- Healing Items: If you're forced into a confrontation, you might take damage. Having a Bandage or Painkillers (found in medical cabinets and abandoned first-aid kits) ready can allow you to escape and re-establish stealth, rather than being cornered.
- Melee Weapons: While this guide focuses on avoidance, a well-timed stealth attack with a Rusty Pipe or Broken Glass Shard (often found in dilapidated environments) can instantly neutralize weaker enemies from behind. This is a high-risk, high-reward strategy and should only be attempted when absolutely necessary and you are certain of a clean kill.
Specific Scenario Walkthroughs (Example)
The Abandoned Hospital - Floor 3: The Patient Wing
This area is crawling with "Shamblers" – slow, but highly sensitive to sound. Your goal is to reach the Records Room at the far end.
- Upon entering Floor 3, immediately crouch. Two Shamblers patrol the main corridor.
- Wait for the Shambler on the left to move towards the west end of the corridor.
- Carefully move along the right wall, using the overturned gurneys and medical carts as cover.
- You'll pass an open door to a small waiting area. Inside, on a broken chair, you'll find an Empty Bottle. Pick it up.
- The second Shambler patrols near the entrance to the Records Room. When it turns its back and moves slightly away, throw the Empty Bottle towards the far end of the corridor, past the Records Room.
- The Shambler will slowly investigate the noise. This is your window. Quickly but quietly enter the Records Room.
- Once inside, close the door behind you (if possible) to create a sound barrier and prevent immediate detection.
Remember, patience is key. Rushing into situations will almost always lead to detection and a difficult fight. Observe, plan, and execute your movements with precision to survive the horrors of Post Trauma.
