Anarki in Quake III Arena is a cyber-punk with a 'seemingly endless array of cybronic implants.' Learn about his strategy and how to defeat him.

Anarki's Cybernetic Enhancements

So, you've run into Anarki, huh? This guy's a real piece of work, a cyber-board surfer who's basically traded his humanity for a seemingly endless array of cybronic implants. We're talking a big spike on his shoulder, a plate on his back, super-powered legs, and even VR goggles fused to his face. It's made him a half-dead cyberpunk with a sugar addiction, but don't let that fool you. His deadly reflexes and constant virtual reality overlay mean he's always ready for a fight.

Instead of normal footsteps, his hoverboard just hums, and since his mouth is sewn shut, he makes these weird humming noises when he's hurt. He's the Arena Lord of Tier 4 and you'll find him waiting at Vertical Vengeance (q3tourney4).

Anarki's whole deal is about getting an edge. He's all about those cybernetic enhancements, which give him a constant stream of data. For him, the world is basically a surreal VR experience, but the damage he deals is very, very real. He's a real showman, and thanks to all those cybronic software downloads, his own personality and memories are pretty much gone, blended with stolen ideas and battle memories, both real and virtual. He genuinely can't tell the difference anymore.

He's obsessed with getting his hands on a Shotgun – it's his absolute favorite. He'll also always try to snag the two power-ups on his map. Anarki doesn't have much respect for anyone but himself and really hates losing.

Strategy Tips for Fighting Anarki

Vertical Vengeance is a tricky map with catwalks and a central tower. Anarki loves to boost himself up high in his tower. If you don't surprise him right away, he's got lightning-fast reflexes (especially on higher difficulties) and can counter-attack before you know it.

  • He usually starts with the Rocket Launcher, but will switch to the Plasma Gun and Railgun. He's not great with the Machine Gun from far away, but don't get complacent; he can still take you out with his other weapons. If he gets a good streak going, he can be a real menace.
  • Expect to hit a wall on your first try. Vertical Vengeance has more long-range fights than other maps, and Anarki tests your reflexes and map control.
  • His reaction time and turning speed are the fastest among arena leaders on the highest difficulty. Combined with his accuracy, he can deal serious damage quickly. If you rely purely on reflexes, you'll lose unless you surprise him.
  • Use the time it takes for weapons to respawn after you're fragged. Anarki fights recklessly and aggressively. If you can get a good kill streak going, you can outgun him.
  • Move fast around the map and try to engage him when he's just respawned and weaker. Use strafe jumping and bunny hopping to get around quickly and find him before he grabs important weapons or items.
  • Listen for item respawn noises. This map has distinct metallic, crackling, and buzzing sounds for important items. Megahealth spawns every 2 minutes, and Heavy Armor every 25 seconds. Grabbing these quickly can make the match much easier.
  • Try to stay on the top floor and watch the lower levels. Keep an eye on important item spawns and the Rocket Launcher spawn. He's most dangerous when he has the RL or Railgun in the mid-tower.
  • Do not let him get the Railgun in the middle of the map. Control the door under the Heavy Armor ledge. He can sneak in and reach the RG via an accelerator pad.
  • If he knocks you off the mid-tower and gets buffed, try to weaken him from a distance with accurate Railgun and Rocket Launcher shots. Avoid direct contact and don't use bounce pads when he's nearby. Use doors to lose him.
