Enemy Attack Patterns & Tells
Understanding the nuances of enemy behavior in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is paramount for survival. This section details the attack patterns and crucial "tells" for common adversaries, allowing you to anticipate their moves and conserve precious resources.
Zombies
The most ubiquitous threat, zombies are slow but relentless. Their attacks are predictable, but their numbers can quickly overwhelm an unprepared player.
- Standard Bite: The most common attack. A zombie will slowly shamble towards Jill, then lunge forward with a bite.
- Tell: Listen for their signature groan and watch for a slight pause before they lunge.
- Strategy: Backpedal or perform a quick turn (R1 + Down on D-Pad) to create distance. A single headshot with the Handgun (found early in the game, e.g., in the alley near the start) can often stagger them, allowing you to run past. If you have the Shotgun (found in the Police Station's S.T.A.R.S. Office), a close-range blast to the torso will usually knock them down, giving you a window to escape or finish them off.
- Grab: If a zombie gets too close, it will grab Jill, initiating a struggle.
- Tell: No specific visual tell beyond being in extremely close proximity.
- Strategy: Rapidly mash action buttons to break free. If you have a Combat Knife (Jill starts with this), you can use it as a defensive item to instantly escape, dealing minor damage to the zombie. This is a good way to save ammo.
- Crawler: If a zombie's legs are destroyed, it will crawl.
- Tell: Obvious visual cue of missing legs.
- Strategy: Crawlers are slower but still dangerous. They will attempt to grab Jill's ankles. Simply run past them or finish them with a single Handgun shot.
Cerberus (Zombie Dogs)
These infected canines are fast and agile, making them a significant threat in tight corridors.
- Leap Attack: Cerberus will often charge and leap at Jill, knocking her down.
- Tell: They will crouch slightly, bark, and then spring forward.
- Strategy: The key here is anticipation. As soon as you hear their barks or see them winding up, fire a quick shot with the Handgun or Shotgun. The Shotgun is particularly effective at stopping their charge. If you have a Grenade Launcher (found in the City Hall), a single grenade round can often take out multiple dogs.
- Bite: If they get close without leaping, they'll attempt a quick bite.
- Tell: Less pronounced than the leap, but still a quick lunge.
- Strategy: Keep moving. Their speed makes them hard to hit reliably with precise shots. Aim for body shots with the Handgun or use the Shotgun's spread.
Hunter Gamma
These amphibious creatures are found in sewers and aquatic environments. They are deceptively fast and can inflict significant damage.
- Tongue Lash: The Hunter Gamma will extend its long tongue to strike Jill from a short distance.
- Tell: A distinct gurgling sound and a slight rearing back before the tongue whips out.
- Strategy: This attack is quick. Your best bet is to keep your distance. The Shotgun is highly effective against them, often knocking them back or killing them in one or two shots. The Grenade Launcher with Freeze Rounds (Freeze Rounds found in the Water Treatment Plant) will instantly kill them.
- Leap Attack: If Jill is too close, the Hunter Gamma will leap and attempt to grab her.
- Tell: A more pronounced crouch and a louder gurgle than the tongue lash.
- Strategy: Avoid close quarters. If grabbed, mash buttons to escape. Prioritize taking them out from a distance.
Drain Deimos
These insectoid creatures are often found clinging to walls or ceilings in the sewers. They are fast and can be difficult to target.
- Pounce Attack: Drain Deimos will drop from above or pounce from a wall, attempting to latch onto Jill.
- Tell: A distinct chittering sound and a rapid movement towards Jill. They are often camouflaged until they move.
- Strategy: Listen carefully for their chittering. When they drop, quickly aim upwards with the Handgun or Shotgun. The Shotgun's wider spread is advantageous here. If one latches on, rapidly mash buttons to shake it off before it drains your health.
- Acid Spit: Some Drain Deimos can spit corrosive acid from a distance.
- Tell: A brief pause and a visible glob of green fluid forming in their mouth before spitting.
- Strategy: Sidestep the incoming projectile. This attack is less common than the pounce but can be annoying. Prioritize eliminating them quickly.
