Magnums are the pinnacle of destructive power in Resident Evil 4 Remake, capable of obliterating even the toughest enemies with a single well-placed shot. While rare and expensive, these hand cannons are essential for dealing with boss encounters and heavily armored foes. Mastering their use and upgrades can significantly ease your survival.
There are three primary Magnums available in the game: the Broken Butterfly, the Killer7, and the Handcannon (a special unlockable). Each has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of firepower, reload speed, and capacity. The Broken Butterfly is often the first Magnum you'll acquire, offering a good balance of power and availability. The Killer7, found later, boasts a higher critical hit rate, making it excellent for headshots. The Handcannon, unlocked after achieving an A-rank on all Mercenaries stages with each character, is the most powerful but has limited ammo capacity and a slower reload.
Upgrading your Magnum is crucial to maximizing its potential. The Merchant offers a series of upgrades for each weapon, including Power, Fire Rate, Reload Speed, and Capacity. Investing in Power is paramount, as it directly increases the damage output per shot. For the Broken Butterfly and Killer7, increasing Capacity can also be beneficial, allowing you to carry more rounds. The ultimate upgrade for any Magnum is its Exclusive ability. For the Broken Butterfly, this increases its firepower significantly. The Killer7's Exclusive grants it an even higher critical hit rate, making it a precision-killing machine. The Handcannon's Exclusive allows it to fire three shots at once, dramatically increasing its damage potential, though it consumes more ammo.

When using Magnums, always aim for the head or critical weak points. These weapons are best saved for situations where you absolutely need to end an encounter quickly, such as against bosses like El Gigante, Mendez, or Krauser, or when facing a large group of powerful enemies. Don't waste precious Magnum rounds on standard Ganados unless absolutely necessary. Scavenge for ammunition diligently, as it is scarce. The Merchant occasionally sells Magnum ammo, but it comes at a steep price. Prioritize upgrading your chosen Magnum early if you plan to rely on it, as the investment pays dividends in survivability.
