Game Modes
Resident Evil 5 offers several game modes beyond the main campaign, each providing unique challenges and replayability. Mastering these modes is key to unlocking all achievements, earning valuable currency for weapon upgrades, and truly testing your survival skills.
Story Mode
This is the core experience of Resident Evil 5, following Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar through their mission in Africa. Story Mode can be played solo with an AI partner or cooperatively with another player, either locally via split-screen or online.
Difficulty Settings
The game features several difficulty settings that significantly impact enemy health, damage output, item availability, and AI behavior. Choosing the right difficulty is crucial for an enjoyable experience, whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned veteran.
- Amateur: Ideal for players new to Resident Evil or those who prefer a less stressful experience. Enemies are weaker, and more ammunition and healing items are readily available.
- Normal: The standard difficulty, offering a balanced challenge for most players. Requires strategic use of resources and teamwork.
- Veteran: A tougher challenge, with stronger enemies, less ammo, and more aggressive AI. This mode demands a good understanding of game mechanics and weapon effectiveness.
- Professional: The ultimate test of skill. Enemies deal massive damage, often capable of downing players in one or two hits. Item drops are scarce, and enemy placement can be more challenging. This mode is often required for S-rank achievements and unlocks.
Co-op Play
Resident Evil 5 was designed with co-op in mind. Playing with a human partner drastically changes the dynamic, allowing for more advanced strategies and coordinated attacks. Communication is key, especially on higher difficulties. Remember to share ammunition and healing items effectively!
The Mercenaries
Unlockable after completing the main Story Mode, The Mercenaries is a fast-paced, arcade-style mode focused on scoring points by defeating waves of enemies within a time limit. It's an excellent way to earn Exchange Points (EP) to upgrade weapons for the main campaign.
Gameplay Mechanics
- Time Limit: Each stage has a base time limit, typically 2:00. Extend your time by collecting green time bonuses (+30 seconds) and orange time bonuses (+60 seconds) scattered throughout the map or dropped by specific enemies.
- Combo System: Maintain a combo by defeating enemies quickly. The higher your combo, the more points you earn per kill. Missing a kill for too long or taking damage will break your combo.
- Bonus Time: Certain actions, like performing melee attacks or headshots, can grant small time bonuses.
- Character Selection: You start with Chris (Safari) and Sheva (Clubbin'). Unlock more characters by achieving A or S ranks on specific stages. Each character has a unique loadout and special melee attacks.
Strategies for Success
- Know the Map: Learn item locations, enemy spawn points, and choke points for each stage.
- Prioritize Time Bonuses: Always prioritize collecting time bonuses, especially the orange ones, to ensure you don't run out of time.
- Maintain Combos: Focus on keeping your combo chain alive. Use quick melee attacks on stunned enemies to save ammo and extend combos.
- use Melee: Melee attacks are powerful and conserve ammo. Stun enemies with a shot to the head or knee, then follow up with a melee attack.
- Weapon Management: Each character has a fixed loadout. Learn to use their strengths and conserve ammo for tougher enemies like Executioners or Gatling Gun Majini.
- Co-op Synergy: In co-op, coordinate your attacks. One player can stun enemies while the other finishes them with melee, or one can cover while the other collects time bonuses.
Lost in Nightmares (DLC)
This downloadable content chapter provides a prequel story, exploring Chris and Jill Valentine's mission to the Spencer Estate. It features a more classic Resident Evil survival horror feel, with puzzles and limited resources.
Key Features
- Puzzles: Expect environmental puzzles reminiscent of earlier Resident Evil titles. For example, finding the "Emblem of the Guard" to unlock doors or solving the "Clock Puzzle" to access hidden areas.
- Limited Resources: Ammunition and healing items are scarcer than in the main campaign, emphasizing careful combat and resource management.
- New Enemies: Encounter unique enemies specific to the Spencer Estate, such as the grotesque "Guard" creatures.
Walkthrough Tips
- Explore Thoroughly: Search every room for hidden items and clues. The Spencer Estate is full of secrets.
- Conserve Ammo: Headshots are crucial. Use your Knife for weaker enemies when safe to do so.
- Work Together: If playing co-op, one player can distract enemies while the other solves puzzles or searches for items.
Desperate Escape (DLC)
This action-oriented DLC chapter follows Jill Valentine and Josh Stone as they fight their way through hordes of Majini to reach a rendezvous point. It's a high-octane experience focused on intense combat and teamwork.
Key Features
- Horde Combat: Expect to face large numbers of Majini, including tougher variants like the Gatling Gun Majini and Executioner Majini.
- Timed Objectives: Some sections require you to hold out against waves of enemies until a timer runs down or a specific objective is completed.
- Stronger Loadouts: Jill and Josh start with more powerful weapons and a decent amount of ammo, reflecting the mode's action focus.
Strategies for Survival
- use the Environment: Look for explosive barrels, high ground, and cover points to gain an advantage over the Majini.
- Focus Fire: Coordinate with your partner to quickly eliminate dangerous enemies like the Gatling Gun Majini.
- Melee for Crowd Control: Use melee attacks to push back groups of enemies and create breathing room.
- Stay Mobile: Don't get cornered. Keep moving and repositioning to avoid being overwhelmed.
