Damage Types & Resistances
Understanding the various damage types and how enemies (and you!) resist them is crucial for survival in the nightmare of Raccoon City. This section will break down the different forms of harm you'll encounter and how to best mitigate or exploit them.
Physical Damage
This is the most common damage type, inflicted by direct attacks from creatures like Zombies, Cerberus, and Hunters. It's also the damage type dealt by most firearms.
- Sources:
- Melee Attacks: Zombie bites, Hunter claws, Licker tongues.
- Firearms: Handguns (Glock 27, M92F), Shotguns (M37, M1100-P), Submachine Guns (MAC-11), Assault Rifles (M4A1).
- Environmental: Falling debris, certain traps.
- Resistances:
- Player: There are no direct resistances to physical damage for players. Avoiding hits is your best defense.
- Enemies: Most standard enemies have a baseline resistance. Heavily armored creatures like the Tyrant or certain mutated forms will take significantly less damage from conventional firearms. Aim for weak points (e.g., Zombie heads, Licker brains) for increased damage.
- Mitigation:
- Healing Items: Green Herbs, Blue Herbs (for poison), Mixed Herbs (various combinations), First Aid Sprays.
- Evasion: Learning enemy attack patterns and utilizing the dodge mechanic (character-dependent) is paramount.
- Defensive Items: While rare, some characters might find defensive items like the Defense Vest in scenarios like "The Hive" or "Underbelly," which can reduce incoming physical damage.
Poison Damage
Poison is a debilitating status effect that slowly drains your health over time. It can be inflicted by specific enemies or environmental hazards.
- Sources:
- Enemies:
- Giant Moth: Found in "The Hive," their dust attacks can poison you.
- Lickers: Their tongue attacks in scenarios like "The Hive" or "Decisions, Decisions" can sometimes inflict poison.
- Poison Ivy: In "Below Freezing Point," contact with these mutated plants will poison you.
- Environmental: Certain gas leaks or contaminated areas (though less common for direct poison damage).
- Enemies:
- Resistances:
- Player: No inherent resistance.
- Enemies: Most enemies are immune to poison.
- Mitigation:
- Blue Herbs: The primary cure for poison. Always carry at least one, especially in scenarios known for poison-inflicting enemies. Blue Herbs can often be found in areas like the Hospital Basement in "The Hive" or the Research Lab in "Below Freezing Point."
- Mixed Herbs (Green + Blue): Cures poison and restores a small amount of health.
- Antidote: A rare item that functions identically to a Blue Herb.
Acid Damage
Acid is a potent damage type that can quickly deplete your health and often causes a "bleeding" status, which further drains health.
- Sources:
- Enemies:
- Hunter R: Their acid spit in "The Hive" is a major threat.
- G-Mutant: The large, grotesque creatures in "End of the Road" can spew corrosive bile.
- Leech Man: In "Flashback," their acidic bodily fluids can damage you on contact.
- Enemies:
- Resistances:
- Player: No inherent resistance.
- Enemies: Most enemies are immune to acid.
- Mitigation:
- Healing Items: Green Herbs, Mixed Herbs, First Aid Sprays. Acid damage is often severe, so prompt healing is necessary.
- Evasion: Staying out of range of acid-spitting enemies is the best strategy. Prioritize eliminating them quickly.
Fire Damage
Fire damage is less common but can be devastating, often causing a "burning" status effect that deals continuous damage.
- Sources:
- Enemies:
- Eliminator: The ape-like creatures in "The Hive" and "Underbelly" can sometimes inflict fire damage with their explosive attacks.
- Certain Bosses: Some boss encounters may feature fire-based attacks.
- Environmental: Exploding barrels or gas tanks, especially prevalent in scenarios like "Hellfire."
- Enemies:
- Resistances:
- Player: No inherent resistance.
- Enemies:
- Zombies: Highly susceptible to fire. A single Molotov Cocktail can often dispatch a group.
- Plant-based enemies: Creatures like the Poison Ivy in "Below Freezing Point" or the Giant Plant in "Flashback" are extremely vulnerable to fire.
- Mitigation:
- Healing Items: Green Herbs, Mixed Herbs, First Aid Sprays.
- Fire Extinguisher: While not a direct healing item, the Fire Extinguisher found in places like the R.P.D. Main Hall in "Outbreak" can be used to douse environmental fires, preventing further damage.
- Evasion: Avoid areas with active flames or enemies that utilize fire attacks.
Special Resistances & Weaknesses
Beyond the general damage types, some enemies have unique properties:
- Headshots: Always aim for the head of most humanoid enemies (Zombies, Lickers) for critical damage.
- Electric Damage: While not a player-inflicted damage type, some environmental hazards or specific enemy attacks (e.g., the Thunderbolt in "Underbelly") can deal electric damage. There are no specific resistances or items for this, so avoidance is key.
- Explosives: Grenade Launchers with Explosive Rounds or Molotov Cocktails are highly effective against groups of weaker enemies and can stagger larger foes.
- UV Light: The UV Light found in "Below Freezing Point" is essential for dealing with the G-Virus Mutants in the Research Lab, weakening them for conventional attacks.
Mastering these damage types and understanding enemy vulnerabilities will significantly improve your chances of survival in the unforgiving world of Resident Evil Outbreak.
