Enemy Weaknesses & Strategies
Navigating the treacherous streets and infected buildings of Raccoon City requires more than just a keen eye for items; understanding your enemies' weaknesses is paramount to survival. This section details common foes, their vulnerabilities, and effective strategies to conserve precious ammunition and health items.
Zombies
The most ubiquitous threat, zombies are slow but relentless. Headshots are always the most efficient way to dispatch them, but other tactics can be just as effective, especially when ammo is scarce.
- Headshots: A few well-placed shots to the head with a Handgun or Shotgun will bring most zombies down quickly. Aiming for the head is crucial for conserving ammunition.
- Melee Attacks: If you're playing as Kevin Ryman or Mark Wilkins, their unique melee attacks (Kick and Tackle, respectively) can knock zombies down, allowing you to run past or stomp on them while they're prone. David King's wrench can also be surprisingly effective.
- Environmental Hazards: Look for opportunities to use the environment. Kicking down a ladder or closing a door on a pursuing zombie can buy you valuable time or even eliminate the threat.
- Playing Dead: If a zombie falls but doesn't dissolve, it might be playing dead. Approach cautiously and stomp on its head to ensure it's truly incapacitated.
- Molotov Cocktails: These are excellent for clearing groups of zombies or dealing significant damage to stronger individual targets. Craft them by combining a Kerosene Bottle with a Lighter.
Lickers
These agile, blind creatures are a significant threat due to their speed and powerful tongue attacks. They rely on sound, making stealth a viable option.
- Sound Sensitivity: Lickers are blind but have acute hearing. Walking slowly (holding the R1 button) can allow you to sneak past them undetected.
- Shotgun/Magnum: If combat is unavoidable, a Shotgun blast at close range or a single Magnum round to the head is usually enough to take them down. Aim for their exposed brains.
- Explosives: Grenade Launchers with Explosive Rounds are highly effective, often taking down a Licker in one hit.
- Decoys: In some scenarios, you can use loud noises (like firing a weapon in a different direction) to draw a Licker away from your path.
Cerberus (Zombie Dogs)
Fast and aggressive, Cerberus can quickly close distances and inflict bleeding status. Prioritize them in open areas.
- Shotgun: The wide spread of a Shotgun is ideal for hitting these fast-moving targets. Two to three shots are typically sufficient.
- Handgun Strategy: If only a Handgun is available, aim for their head as they lunge. Backpedal while firing to maintain distance.
- Melee Knockdown: Characters with strong melee attacks (Kevin, Mark) can knock them down, giving you a chance to escape or finish them off with a stomp.
- Healing: Always carry a Blue Herb or First Aid Spray to cure the bleeding status effect they often inflict.
Hunters
These reptilian B.O.W.s are incredibly dangerous, capable of instant-kill attacks if your health is low. They are fast and can jump long distances.
- Shotgun/Magnum: These are your best friends against Hunters. A well-aimed Shotgun blast or Magnum round can stagger or even kill them outright.
- Grenade Launcher: Acid Rounds are particularly effective against Hunters, often taking them down in one or two hits.
- Avoidance: If you're low on health or ammo, it's often best to avoid Hunters entirely. Their attacks are devastating.
- Staggering: Continuous fire from even a Handgun can sometimes stagger a Hunter, giving you a brief window to escape or land a critical hit.
Eliminating Specific Threats: Item Locations & Crafting
Effective enemy management often relies on having the right tools. Here's a quick reference for acquiring key items:
- Handgun Ammo: Commonly found in most scenarios, often in drawers, on shelves, or dropped by defeated enemies.
- Shotgun Ammo: Less common than handgun ammo, typically found in secure locations or near Shotguns themselves. For example, in "Outbreak," a Shotgun and some ammo can be found in the Police Station's West Office.
- Kerosene Bottle & Lighter: Kerosene Bottles are often found in maintenance areas or storage rooms. A Lighter is a common personal item for some characters (e.g., Kevin) or can be found in various scenarios. Combine them to create a Molotov Cocktail.
- Blue Herbs: Essential for curing poison and bleeding. Look for them in outdoor areas, gardens, or sometimes in medical cabinets.
- Green Herbs: Your primary source of healing. Found almost everywhere. Combine three Green Herbs for a Full Recovery.
