Environmental Hazards & Traps
Raccoon City is a dangerous place, and not just because of the hordes of undead. The crumbling infrastructure, biological outbreaks, and desperate survivors have turned the environment itself into a deadly adversary. Understanding and mitigating these hazards is crucial for survival. This section details common environmental dangers and how to navigate them.
Poisonous Environments
Certain areas are contaminated with toxic gases or biological agents that can inflict the "Poison" status effect, slowly draining your health. Characters like George Hamilton, with his medical expertise, or Cindy Lennox, with her herb-mixing abilities, can be invaluable here.
- Sewers and Chemical Labs: These locations are prime candidates for airborne toxins.
- Strategy:
- Always carry a Blue Herb or a Mixed Herb (G+B) to cure poison.
- If playing as Cindy, utilize her unique ability to mix herbs on the fly to create antidotes.
- Minimize time spent in poisoned areas. If an objective requires extended exposure, ensure your inventory is stocked with healing items.
- Some areas, like the "Underbelly" scenario's sewer sections, feature continuously spewing gas. Sprint through these sections and heal immediately after exiting.
Falling Debris & Structural Instability
The chaos of the outbreak has left many buildings structurally unsound. Keep an eye out for visual cues like cracked walls, crumbling ceilings, or shaking environments.
- Collapsing Floors/Ceilings: In scenarios like "The Hive" or "Hellfire," certain areas will collapse if too much weight is applied or if a specific event triggers them.
- Strategy:
- "The Hive" - Hospital Upper Floors: Be wary of the weakened floorboards in the patient rooms. Moving too quickly or having multiple characters on a single weak spot can cause a collapse, dropping you to the floor below and potentially injuring you. Stick to the sturdier sections of the room or move one character at a time.
- "Hellfire" - Burning Hotel: The fire itself causes structural damage. Certain pathways may become blocked by falling debris, forcing you to find alternate routes. Pay attention to the sound of creaking and groaning structures.
- Avoid lingering under visibly damaged areas. If a path seems precarious, look for an alternative.
Fire Hazards
Fire is a constant threat in several scenarios, not only damaging you but also blocking paths and attracting unwanted attention.
- "Hellfire" Scenario: The entire scenario revolves around a burning hotel.
- Strategy:
- Extinguishing Flames: Look for Fire Hoses or Fire Extinguishers. These are often found near fire points. For example, in "Hellfire," a Fire Extinguisher can be found in the Lobby or Staff Room.
- Blocked Paths: Fire can completely block corridors. You'll need to find a way to put it out or locate an alternate route. Sometimes, a specific item, like a Valve Handle to activate a sprinkler system, is required.
- Damage: Walking through flames will rapidly deplete your health. Avoid direct contact.
- Smoke: Smoke-filled rooms reduce visibility and can also cause minor damage over time. Move quickly through these areas.
Water-Based Hazards
Flooding and contaminated water sources present their own unique challenges.
- "Underbelly" Scenario - Flooded Sewers: Large sections of the sewer system are flooded.
- Strategy:
- Slow Movement: Moving through deep water significantly slows your character, making you vulnerable to attacks from creatures like the Giga Bite or Leeches.
- Contamination: Prolonged exposure to the contaminated water can sometimes lead to the "Poison" status.
- Navigating Currents: In some areas, strong currents can push you, making precise movement difficult. Plan your route carefully and be prepared to fight off enemies that exploit your reduced mobility.
- Look for raised platforms or alternate, drier paths whenever possible.
Traps & Security Systems
Some locations feature active security measures or deliberate traps set by Umbrella or desperate survivors.
- Laser Grids: In scenarios like "Decisions, Decisions," certain research labs are protected by laser grids.
- Strategy:
- Deactivation: These often require a specific Keycard or the manipulation of a Control Panel. For instance, the laser grid in the B4F Laboratory in "Decisions, Decisions" can be temporarily deactivated by interacting with the nearby console.
- Timing: If deactivation isn't immediately possible, some laser grids have patterns that can be timed and dodged, though this is risky and can result in significant damage.
- Pressure Plates/Tripwires: Less common, but be aware of suspicious floor panels or wires in dimly lit areas.
- Strategy:
- Move cautiously and observe your surroundings. Characters with keen eyesight or those who can move stealthily (like Kevin Ryman's unique dodge) might have a slight advantage.
- Often, these traps trigger an alarm, release enemies, or cause environmental damage.
Electrical Hazards
Exposed wiring and damaged electrical systems can be lethal.
- "The Hive" - Hospital Basement: Flooded areas with exposed electrical conduits.
- Strategy:
- Power Shut-off: You'll typically need to find a Power Switch or Circuit Breaker to safely navigate these areas. In "The Hive," the power to the flooded basement can be controlled from the Generator Room.
- Avoid Contact: Touching electrified water or exposed wires will result in instant, heavy damage or even death.
