Character Differences & Scenarios

Choosing your character in Resident Evil isn't just a cosmetic decision; it fundamentally alters your experience, from starting equipment and inventory space to key item locations and even the narrative path. Understanding these differences is crucial for effective survival.

Jill Valentine: The Master of Unlocking

Jill is generally considered the easier character for a first playthrough due to her advantages. She starts with more inventory slots and a key item that simplifies early game progression.

  • Starting Equipment:
    • Beretta M92F (Handgun)
    • Combat Knife
    • 2 Clips of Handgun Ammo (30 rounds total)
    • Lockpick (UNIQUE ITEM)
    • 8 Inventory Slots
  • Key Differences & Walkthrough Steps:
    • Lockpick Advantage: Jill's Lockpick is invaluable. It allows her to open several locked doors and desk drawers early on that Chris cannot, granting access to extra ammo, healing items, and even shortcuts.
    • Early Shotgun Access: With the Lockpick, Jill can access the Shotgun in the Main Hall's west wing much earlier. After encountering Barry in the Dining Room, head through the double doors to the west. Use the Lockpick on the door to the small storage room (where the Dog Whistle is for Chris). Inside, you'll find the Shotgun. This significantly boosts her combat capabilities against early zombies and Hunters.
    • Barry Burton's Assistance: Barry plays a more active role in Jill's scenario. He will occasionally provide her with supplies, such as Acid Rounds for the Grenade Launcher, and even save her from certain death traps. For instance, in the Dining Room, after the first zombie encounter, Barry will give you the Chemical for the plant puzzle. Later, he'll rescue you from the collapsing ceiling trap in the Mansion's west wing.
    • Grenade Launcher: Jill is the only character who can obtain and use the Grenade Launcher, found in the Medical Room on the Mansion's second floor. This powerful weapon is excellent for crowd control and boss fights. Ensure you collect all available Grenade Rounds (Explosive, Flame, Acid) as you progress.
    • Less Inventory Management: Her 8 inventory slots mean less backtracking to the Item Box, allowing for a smoother exploration flow. Prioritize carrying a weapon, ammo, a healing item, and key items for your immediate objective.

Chris Redfield: The Tough Guy

Chris's scenario is more challenging, making it suitable for players seeking a greater test of their survival skills. He has fewer inventory slots and relies more on finding specific keys to progress.

  • Starting Equipment:
    • Beretta M92F (Handgun)
    • Combat Knife
    • 1 Clip of Handgun Ammo (15 rounds total)
    • 6 Inventory Slots
  • Key Differences & Walkthrough Steps:
    • Limited Inventory: Chris's 6 inventory slots necessitate careful item management. You'll frequently need to decide what to carry and what to store, leading to more trips to the Item Box. Prioritize key items, a weapon, and one healing item.
    • No Lockpick: Without the Lockpick, Chris must find specific keys to open doors that Jill can simply bypass. This often means taking longer routes and facing more enemies. For example, to access the Shotgun, Chris needs to find the Armor Key in the west wing of the Mansion, then use it on the door leading to the room with the Shotgun trap.
    • Rebecca Chambers' Support: Rebecca is Chris's primary support character. She will occasionally heal Chris if he's injured and even accompany him to certain areas, such as the Medical Room. To trigger her healing, simply enter a safe room with her present while Chris is in "Caution" or "Danger" status. She also plays a crucial role in solving the piano puzzle in the Dining Room to obtain the Musical Score for the Moon Crest.
    • Flamethrower: Chris is the only character who can obtain and use the Flamethrower, found in the Guardhouse. While powerful against certain enemies like Plant 42, it consumes fuel rapidly. Conserve its use for specific encounters.
    • Increased Difficulty: Due to fewer resources and more complex navigation, Chris's scenario generally presents a higher difficulty curve. Be prepared for more intense combat and resource scarcity. Consider using the Combat Knife more frequently to conserve precious handgun ammo against single zombies.

Scenario Overlap & Unique Events

While the core objective remains the same (escape the Mansion and uncover Umbrella's secrets), certain events and boss encounters differ based on your chosen character:

  • Plant 42: Both characters face Plant 42, but the strategy differs. Jill can use the V-JOLT chemical to weaken it significantly, making the fight much easier. Chris, lacking the V-JOLT option, must fight it directly with firearms or the Flamethrower.
  • Yawn (Giant Snake): The initial encounter with Yawn in the attic is more dangerous for Chris, as he has fewer resources. Jill benefits from Barry's presence during this fight, who can provide cover fire.
  • Final Boss: The final boss encounter and its lead-up will have slight variations depending on who you play as and which support character (Barry or Rebecca) survives.

Experiment with both characters to fully appreciate the depth and replayability of Resident Evil. Each playthrough offers a fresh perspective on the terrifying events within the Spencer Mansion.
