Prayers: Class Tiers
Prayers in Salt and Sanctuary function as a unique form of magic, offering both offensive and defensive boons that scale with your Wisdom stat. Unlike Incantations, Prayers often provide utility, healing, and powerful area-of-effect damage. This section will break down the most effective Prayers for various playstyles and provide guidance on how to acquire them.
S-Tier Prayers: Essential for Any Build
These Prayers are so universally strong that they can enhance almost any character, regardless of their primary stat investment. Even a character with minimal Wisdom can benefit greatly from their utility.
- Divine Blessed Weapon:
- Effect: Imbues your right-hand weapon with Holy damage, significantly increasing its attack power. The damage bonus scales exceptionally well with Wisdom.
- Acquisition: This Prayer is available early from the Stone Roots Creed. You can join the Stone Roots at the first Sanctuary you encounter, directly after the initial boss, the Kraeken Cyclops. Simply offer a Stone Roots Devotion at their altar.
- Strategy: Activate this before tough boss fights or challenging enemy groups. Its duration is generous, and the damage boost is often superior to elemental resins.
- Mend:
- Effect: A small, quick heal over time. While not as potent as a Flask of Crimson Tears, it can be cast repeatedly and costs very little focus.
- Acquisition: Also available from the Stone Roots Creed. Like Divine Blessed Weapon, it's accessible very early in the game.
- Strategy: Use this during exploration to top off your health without consuming precious healing flasks. It's also excellent for mitigating poison or bleed damage over time.
A-Tier Prayers: Highly Recommended for Wisdom Builds
These Prayers offer significant power and utility, particularly for characters investing heavily in Wisdom. They can form the core of a powerful divine spellcaster or provide excellent support for a hybrid build.
- Guardian Light:
- Effect: Summons a floating orb of light that slowly orbits the caster, dealing Holy damage to enemies it touches. It also provides a small amount of light, which can be useful in dark areas.
- Acquisition: Obtained from the Devara's Light Creed. To join, you'll need to find their Sanctuary. The first one is located in the Village of Smile, shortly after defeating the Queen of Smiles. Offer a Devara's Light Devotion.
- Strategy: Cast this before entering crowded areas or against slower, larger enemies. The persistent damage can chip away at health bars, and it's particularly effective against enemies weak to Holy.
- Retribution:
- Effect: Unleashes a burst of Holy energy around the caster, damaging all nearby enemies. This is an excellent crowd-control and damage option.
- Acquisition: Available from the Devara's Light Creed, similar to Guardian Light.
- Strategy: Perfect for clearing out groups of weaker enemies or creating space during boss encounters. Its quick casting time makes it a reliable panic button.
B-Tier Prayers: Situational but Effective
These Prayers have specific uses or require more careful timing and positioning to be effective. They can still be valuable additions to a Prayer-focused build.
- Pacify:
- Effect: Temporarily stuns or pacifies certain non-boss enemies, making them vulnerable to attack.
- Acquisition: Found within the Order of the Betrayer Creed. This hidden creed is located in the Hager's Cavern area. You'll need to use the Vertigo Obelisk to reach a hidden platform.
- Strategy: Best used on aggressive, fast-moving enemies that are difficult to hit. Test it on different enemy types to see its effectiveness.
- Divine Reach:
- Effect: Extends the range of your melee weapon for a short duration.
- Acquisition: Available from the Stone Roots Creed.
- Strategy: Can be surprisingly effective with slower, heavy weapons to keep enemies at bay or hit flying foes. It's less useful for fast, short-range weapons.
C-Tier Prayers: Niche or Less Impactful
While not inherently bad, these Prayers often have limited utility or are outshone by other options. Consider them only if they perfectly fit a very specific playstyle or challenge run.
- Heal:
- Effect: A single, larger burst heal.
- Acquisition: Devara's Light Creed.
- Strategy: While it heals more than Mend, its higher focus cost and slower cast time make it less efficient for general use. Mend's repeated casting often provides more total healing for less focus over time.
