The Shadowflip Brand
The Shadowflip Brand is an invaluable Stone Veins ability that grants you the power of a mid-air dash, essentially a second jump forward. This ability is crucial for navigating many of Salt and Sanctuary's more challenging platforming sections and reaching otherwise inaccessible areas. Mastering the Shadowflip is key to uncovering secrets, finding hidden items, and progressing through the game.
Acquiring the Shadowflip Brand
The Shadowflip Brand is obtained relatively early in your journey, but it requires defeating a specific boss and exploring a particular area. Follow these steps:
- Defeat The Queen of Smiles: This boss is found in the Festering Banquet area. She's a challenging early-game encounter, so come prepared with upgraded weapons and armor.
- Proceed to the Village of Smiles: After defeating The Queen of Smiles, continue past her arena. You'll enter the Village of Smiles, a dilapidated settlement with several branching paths.
- Locate the Sanctuary: Navigate through the Village of Smiles until you find its Sanctuary. This will serve as a convenient respawn point and a place to rest.
- Find the Bandit's Pass: From the Village of Smiles Sanctuary, head left and drop down to the lower path. Continue left, past several Poisonous Skulls and Drowned Peasants. You'll eventually reach an entrance to the Bandit's Pass.
- Traverse the Bandit's Pass: The Bandit's Pass is a short, linear area primarily populated by Bandits and Poisonous Skulls. Be wary of ambushes.
- Reach the Watching Woods: At the end of the Bandit's Pass, you'll emerge into the Watching Woods. Immediately upon entering, look for a path leading upwards and to the right.
- Claim the Brand: Follow this path, dealing with any Spore Pods or Rotten Walkers in your way. You'll soon come across a small altar or pedestal. Interact with it to receive the Shadowflip Brand.
Utilizing the Shadowflip
Once acquired, the Shadowflip Brand is automatically active. To perform a Shadowflip:
- Jump normally, then press the jump button again while in mid-air.
- Your character will perform a quick dash forward, covering a short distance.
Here are some key strategies and applications for the Shadowflip:
- Gap Crossing: The most obvious use is to cross gaps that are too wide for a normal jump. Experiment with the timing of your second jump to maximize your distance.
- Dodging Attacks: The Shadowflip can be used defensively to quickly reposition yourself or evade incoming enemy attacks, especially those with wide hitboxes.
- Reaching Ledges: Many areas feature ledges that are just out of reach with a standard jump. A well-timed Shadowflip will allow you to grab onto these.
- Platforming Puzzles: Later areas will incorporate intricate platforming challenges that explicitly require the Shadowflip to navigate. Look for sequences of platforms that seem impossible without it.
- Secret Areas: Always be on the lookout for suspicious gaps, ledges, or seemingly unreachable platforms. The Shadowflip is often the key to discovering hidden paths and valuable items.
- Combat Maneuvers: While not a primary combat tool, the Shadowflip can be used to quickly close distances to ranged enemies, escape from overwhelming groups, or even set up aerial attacks.
Practice makes perfect with the Shadowflip. Spend some time in a safe area getting a feel for its range and timing. It will quickly become an indispensable part of your movement toolkit.
