Weapon Upgrades & Customization
While Sam "Serious" Stone is a one-man army from the get-go, even he benefits from a little technological edge. Serious Sam 3: BFE offers a robust, albeit hidden, system for upgrading your arsenal. Unlike many modern shooters, there isn't a dedicated upgrade menu or currency. Instead, upgrades are found as specific, rare pickups scattered throughout the campaign. Finding these will permanently enhance the designated weapon, often adding new firing modes or increasing effectiveness. Mastering their locations is key to maximizing your destructive potential.
Understanding Upgrade Pickups
Weapon upgrades in Serious Sam 3 appear as distinct, glowing blue orbs, often accompanied by a faint hum. They are usually well-hidden, requiring exploration off the beaten path, solving environmental puzzles, or defeating specific, challenging enemy encounters. Once collected, the upgrade is immediately applied to the corresponding weapon. There are no choices to make; each pickup grants a pre-determined enhancement.
Upgrade Locations & Strategies
Assault Rifle
- Upgrade: Grenade Launcher Attachment
- Location: Found in the level "Under the Iron Cloud." After navigating through the initial city ruins and reaching a large open area with a crashed helicopter, look for a partially collapsed building on the left. The upgrade is hidden behind some debris inside.
- Strategy: This is a crucial early-game upgrade. The grenade launcher is excellent for clearing groups of weaker enemies like Gnaar and Kleer Skeletons, or for dealing burst damage to larger foes like Scrapjacks. Conserve grenades for critical moments, as ammo can be scarce.
Shotgun (Pump-Action)
- Upgrade: Auto-Shotgun Conversion
- Location: Located in the level "The Silent Riddler." After a major battle in a large, sand-filled arena with multiple Khnum and Werebulls, search the perimeter. The upgrade is tucked away in a small, easily overlooked alcove behind a crumbling wall.
- Strategy: This transforms your reliable pump-action into a rapid-fire beast. It's incredibly effective against close-range threats and for quickly dispatching Clawdroids. Be mindful of ammo consumption, as the automatic fire can chew through shells quickly.
Minigun
- Upgrade: Explosive Rounds
- Location: Discovered in the level "The Guardian of Time." Towards the end of the level, after defeating a wave of Ugh-Zan III clones, you'll enter a large, multi-tiered structure. The upgrade is on the highest accessible platform, requiring some precise platforming to reach.
- Strategy: This upgrade makes the Minigun even more devastating. The explosive rounds are fantastic for crowd control and shredding armored enemies. Use it to suppress large groups of Kamikazes or to quickly take down Major Biomechanoids.
Rocket Launcher
- Upgrade: Laser-Guided Rockets
- Location: Found in the level "The Last Man on Earth." After a lengthy section involving navigating flooded ruins and fending off numerous Arachnoids, you'll come across a large, open courtyard. Look for a hidden path behind a waterfall on the far side; the upgrade is within.
- Strategy: This upgrade provides unparalleled precision, allowing you to guide rockets directly to weak points or through tight spaces. It's invaluable for dealing with distant Technopolips or for ensuring critical hits on Khnum.
Sniper Rifle
- Upgrade: Thermal Scope
- Location: Located in the level "Metropolis." After a particularly intense street battle involving multiple Gnaar and Kleer Skeletons, you'll enter a building with several floors. The upgrade is on a higher floor, accessible by a hidden elevator or a series of precarious jumps.
- Strategy: The thermal scope highlights enemies, making them visible through smoke, dust, or in low-light conditions. This is especially useful for picking off distant Scrapjacks or Arachnoids in chaotic environments.
Cannon
- Upgrade: Incendiary Cannonballs
- Location: Discovered in the final level, "The Unearthing." During the climactic battle against the final boss, look for a series of destructible pillars around the arena. Destroying a specific pillar will reveal the upgrade.
- Strategy: This late-game upgrade makes the already powerful Cannon even more destructive, adding a damage-over-time effect. It's primarily useful for the final boss encounter, dealing sustained damage to its various forms.
General Tips for Finding Upgrades
- Explore Thoroughly: Don't rush through levels. Many upgrades are off the main path, requiring you to backtrack, look behind obstacles, or solve minor environmental puzzles.
- Listen Carefully: Upgrade pickups emit a subtle hum. If you hear it, you're likely close to a hidden gem.
- Check Every Corner: Look behind pillars, under collapsed structures, and in seemingly inaccessible areas. Serious Sam levels are often more open than they appear.
- After Major Battles: Many upgrades are placed in areas that become accessible or safe to explore only after a significant enemy encounter has been cleared.
By diligently seeking out these hidden upgrades, you'll transform Sam's already impressive arsenal into an unstoppable force, ready to face Mental's hordes with even greater confidence and firepower.
