Weapon Stats & Upgrades

Welcome, Serious Sam veterans and newcomers alike! This section is your definitive guide to mastering the arsenal of Serious Sam: The First Encounter. Unlike many modern shooters, Sam's weapons don't have complex upgrade trees or skill points to allocate. Instead, "upgrades" in Serious Sam come in the form of finding more powerful versions of existing weapons, or acquiring entirely new, devastating tools of destruction. Understanding each weapon's strengths, weaknesses, and optimal usage is key to surviving Mental's hordes.

Pistol

  • Damage: Low
  • Rate of Fire: Moderate (semi-automatic)
  • Ammo Type: Pistol Bullets
  • Max Ammo: 200
  • Strategy: Your starting weapon. While weak, it has infinite ammo (in its dual-wielded form) and is surprisingly accurate. Best used for picking off weak enemies like Gnaars at range, conserving more powerful ammunition, or finishing off heavily damaged foes.
  • Upgrade: The true "upgrade" for the Pistol is finding a Second Pistol.
    • Location: Often found early in levels like "Hatshepsut" or "The Great Pyramid." Keep an eye out in side rooms or after clearing initial enemy waves.
    • Effect: Allows Sam to dual-wield, doubling your rate of fire and overall damage output with pistol bullets. This makes it a viable option for sustained fire against smaller groups or even single Kleer Skeletons if you're low on other ammo.

Shotgun

  • Damage: High (close range)
  • Rate of Fire: Slow (pump action)
  • Ammo Type: Shotgun Shells
  • Max Ammo: 100
  • Strategy: Your bread-and-butter for close-quarters combat. Excellent for one-shotting Gnaars, Kleer Skeletons, and even multiple Headless Kamikazes if they're grouped tightly. Its effectiveness drops off significantly at range due to pellet spread.
  • Upgrade: The Double Shotgun is a massive leap in close-range power.
    • Location: Typically found a few levels into the game, such as in "Valley of the Kings" or "Karnak." It's often a reward for clearing a significant enemy encounter.
    • Effect: Fires two shells simultaneously, delivering devastating damage. This makes it capable of instantly dispatching even tougher enemies like Sirian Werebulls at point-blank range on lower difficulties. Be mindful of its slower reload time and rapid ammo consumption.

Minigun

  • Damage: Moderate (per bullet)
  • Rate of Fire: Extremely High
  • Ammo Type: Minigun Bullets
  • Max Ammo: 1000
  • Strategy: The ultimate crowd control weapon for sustained damage. Its high rate of fire can suppress large groups of weaker enemies or melt through the health of single, tougher foes like Scorpions. Remember to "pre-fire" slightly before enemies are in your crosshairs to account for its spin-up time.
  • Upgrade: There are no direct "upgrades" to the Minigun itself in terms of a more powerful variant. The "upgrade" here is simply acquiring it and managing its substantial ammo requirements.
    • Location: Usually introduced in the mid-game, often in levels like "Karnak" or "Luxor." It's a key weapon for tackling the increasing enemy density.
    • Effect: Provides unparalleled sustained damage. Essential for boss fights and clearing out massive waves of enemies.

Rocket Launcher

  • Damage: Very High (direct hit & splash)
  • Rate of Fire: Moderate
  • Ammo Type: Rockets
  • Max Ammo: 50
  • Strategy: Your go-to for heavy damage against large enemies, groups, and aerial threats. The splash damage is invaluable for clearing out clusters of Kamikazes or damaging multiple Bio-Mechanoids. Be cautious of firing too close to yourself, as splash damage can be lethal.
  • Upgrade: Similar to the Minigun, the Rocket Launcher doesn't have a direct "upgrade" variant. Its power is inherent.
    • Location: Typically found in the later half of the game, such as "Memphis" or "The Great Pyramid."
    • Effect: Critical for dealing with Major Bio-Mechanoids, Ugh-Zan III, and clearing out choke points.

Grenade Launcher

  • Damage: High (splash)
  • Rate of Fire: Slow
  • Ammo Type: Grenades
  • Max Ammo: 50
  • Strategy: Excellent for indirect fire, clearing enemies behind cover, or flushing out foes from tight spaces. The grenades bounce, allowing for tactical placements. Less effective against fast-moving single targets.
  • Upgrade: No direct upgrade. Its utility comes from its unique projectile trajectory.
    • Location: Often found around the same time as the Rocket Launcher, in levels like "Memphis" or "The Great Pyramid."
    • Effect: Provides a different approach to area denial and clearing out entrenched enemies compared to the Rocket Launcher.

Lasergun

  • Damage: High (sustained beam)
  • Rate of Fire: Continuous
  • Ammo Type: Energy Cells
  • Max Ammo: 500
  • Strategy: A powerful, accurate weapon for focused damage on single, tough targets or for carving through lines of weaker enemies. Its continuous beam makes it excellent for tracking moving targets. Consumes ammo quickly, so use it judiciously.
  • Upgrade: No direct upgrade. Its strength lies in its sustained, precise damage.
    • Location: Typically acquired in the later stages of the game, such as "The Great Pyramid."
    • Effect: Ideal for taking down Scorpions, Major Bio-Mechanoids, and other high-health enemies.

Cannon

  • Damage: Extreme (direct hit & massive splash)
  • Rate of Fire: Very Slow
  • Ammo Type: Cannonballs
  • Max Ammo: 10
  • Strategy: The ultimate "panic button" and boss killer. One cannonball can wipe out entire screens of enemies or inflict massive damage on Ugh-Zan III. Due to its limited ammo and slow fire rate, save it for the most dire situations or key boss encounters. The projectile has a slight travel time and arc.
  • Upgrade: This is the pinnacle of Sam's arsenal. No upgrades exist beyond finding more precious cannonballs.
    • Location: Very rare, usually found in secret areas or as a reward for completing challenging segments in the final levels, such as "The Great Pyramid" or "Alian Sanctuary."
    • Effect: Unrivaled destructive power. A single shot can turn the tide of battle.
