Enemy Encounters & Strategies
Silent Hill 2 Remake features a terrifying array of creatures, each demanding a unique approach. Conservation of resources is paramount, so knowing when to fight and when to flee is key to survival. This section details common enemy types, their weaknesses, and effective strategies for dealing with them.
Lying Figure
These bandaged, crawling monstrosities are often your first encounter with Silent Hill's horrors. They are relatively slow but can spit corrosive fluid and lash out with their limbs if you get too close.
- Location: Frequently found in the early areas of East South Vale, particularly in apartment complexes and the streets.
- Strategy:
- Melee: The Wooden Plank (found near the beginning of the game, shortly after the Toluca Lake Observation Deck) is effective. Aim for two to three strong swings, then back away to avoid their counter-attack.
- Firearms: The Handgun (found in the apartment building on the second floor, Room 205) can take them down in 3-4 shots to the body, or 1-2 headshots if you can aim precisely. Conserve your ammo for more dangerous threats.
- Evasion: Due to their slow speed, Lying Figures are often best avoided. If you have enough space, simply run past them. They will usually not pursue you far.
- Stun: A well-placed kick after knocking them down can briefly stun them, allowing you to get some extra hits in or escape.
Mannequin
These unsettling, faceless figures are composed of two pairs of female legs. They are more agile than Lying Figures and can deliver quick, damaging kicks.
- Location: Common in apartment buildings, particularly the Blue Creek Apartments and Wood Side Apartments, and later in the town's streets.
- Strategy:
- Melee: The Steel Pipe (found in the alleyway behind the Blue Creek Apartments) is a good option. Wait for them to attack, dodge, then deliver 1-2 strong swings. Their attacks have a short wind-up, making dodging feasible.
- Firearms: The Handgun is less efficient here due to their erratic movement. If you must use a firearm, aim for their torso or upper "body" section.
- Evasion: Mannequins are relatively easy to outrun in open areas. If you're in a tight corridor, consider a quick melee attack to create space, then sprint past.
- Environmental Advantage: Try to lure them into doorways or narrow passages where their agility is hampered, making them easier targets for melee attacks.
Bubble Head Nurse
These grotesque nurses, with their distended, pulsating heads, are a staple of Silent Hill. They are armed with melee weapons (often a pipe or knife) and can be surprisingly aggressive.
- Location: Primarily found within the Brookhaven Hospital, but also appear in later sections of the town.
- Strategy:
- Melee: The Great Knife (obtained from Pyramid Head encounters, though not for general use) is overkill. Stick with the Steel Pipe or even the Wooden Plank if you're desperate. Their attacks are telegraphed, so dodge and counter. Aim for their heads for critical damage.
- Firearms: The Shotgun (found in Brookhaven Hospital, 2F, Examination Room) is highly effective, often taking them down in one or two close-range blasts. Save shotgun shells for these encounters, especially in groups. The Handgun can work, but requires more shots and careful aiming.
- Evasion: While possible, their aggression can make evasion tricky in confined hospital corridors. If you choose to run, ensure you have a clear path and don't get cornered.
- Crowd Control: If facing multiple nurses, use the Shotgun to clear a path or thin their numbers quickly. Consider using a Health Drink or First-Aid Kit if you take significant damage, as they can quickly deplete your health.
Abstract Daddy (Flesh Lips)
These disturbing creatures resemble a bed frame with fleshy, pulsating masses. They are slow but can deal heavy damage if they pin James.
- Location: Exclusively found within the Wood Side Apartments, particularly in Room 208 and 307.
- Strategy:
- Melee: Not recommended. Their large hitboxes make them difficult to avoid, and their attacks are powerful.
- Firearms: The Shotgun is your best friend here. Aim for the fleshy, pulsating "mouth" area for maximum damage. It typically takes 2-3 close-range shotgun blasts to dispatch them.
- Evasion: This is often the safest and most resource-efficient strategy. They are very slow. If you need to pass through a room with one, simply run around it, keeping your distance. Do not let them corner you.
- Stagger: Shotgun blasts can briefly stagger them, giving you a window to reposition or get more shots in.
Mandarin
These unseen creatures cling to ceilings and grates, dropping down to attack or spitting corrosive fluid from above.
- Location: Primarily found in the Prison and later in the Hotel.
- Strategy:
- Melee: Impossible, as they are out of reach.
- Firearms: The Shotgun is effective if you can aim quickly when they drop. The Rifle (found in the Prison, 3F, Shower Room) is also excellent for taking them out from a distance before they can attack. Listen for their distinctive scuttling sounds to anticipate their presence.
- Evasion: Often the best approach. If you hear them, try to sprint through the area quickly. They usually have a set drop point or attack pattern, which you can learn to avoid.
- Flashlight: Keep your flashlight on. While it doesn't directly harm them, it can help you spot their shadows or outlines on the ceiling, giving you a precious moment to react.
