This section will walk you through the game's progression, from the initial separation of the world to the final confrontation with Dr. Eggman. Understanding the flow of the game is crucial for collecting all the Chaos Emeralds, unlocking characters, and achieving 100% completion.

Initial Setup and World Map

Upon starting a new game, you'll be introduced to the fractured world and the immediate threat posed by Dr. Eggman. Your journey begins with Sonic as the primary playable character, and Tails as your initial partner. The game is structured around a World Map, which acts as your hub for selecting zones and accessing various game modes.

World Map Navigation: Use the D-Pad to move between available zones. Initially, only the first zone will be accessible.
Character Selection: Before entering a zone, you can select your main character and partner. Experiment with different team-ups to find combinations that suit your playstyle and help you overcome specific challenges.
Accessing Stages: Each zone consists of three Acts and a Boss Battle. You must complete all three Acts and defeat the boss to progress to the next zone.

Zone Progression and Chaos Emeralds

The core objective of Sonic Advance 3 is to defeat Dr. Eggman in each zone and ultimately restore the world. However, a significant part of the game involves collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds, which are essential for unlocking the true ending and Super Sonic.

Act Completion and Key Collection

Each Act in a zone requires you to reach the Goal Ring. However, to unlock the Special Stage for a Chaos Emerald, you must collect a specific number of Keys within the Act. These Keys are hidden throughout the level, often requiring precise platforming or exploration to find.

Key Locations: Keys are typically found in hidden paths, behind destructible objects, or at the end of challenging platforming sections. Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking areas or alternative routes.
Key Requirement: The number of Keys needed to unlock a Special Stage varies per Act. Pay attention to the on-screen counter.
Special Stage Access: Once you've collected the required Keys in an Act, a Special Spring will appear near the Goal Ring. Jump into it to enter the Special Stage.

Special Stages and Chaos Emeralds

Special Stages are unique 3D sections where you chase a Chaos Emerald. These stages are time-sensitive and require quick reflexes and careful maneuvering.

Emerald Collection: Successfully navigate the Special Stage and catch the Chaos Emerald before time runs out to add it to your collection.
Failure Penalty: If you fail a Special Stage, you'll be returned to the World Map. You can re-attempt the Special Stage from the same Act as long as you have collected the required Keys again.
Importance: Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds is crucial for unlocking the final boss and the true ending of the game. Without them, you will only get a "bad" ending.

Boss Battles

At the end of each zone, you will face a unique boss designed by Dr. Eggman. These battles test your understanding of your chosen characters' abilities and your platforming skills.

Boss Patterns: Each boss has a distinct attack pattern and a specific weakness. Observe their movements carefully to identify openings.
Team-Up Advantages: Utilize your partner's unique abilities during boss fights. For example, Tails can fly you to higher platforms, and Knuckles can break certain barriers.
Rings as Health: Remember that rings act as your health. Collect as many as possible before entering a boss fight to give yourself a buffer.

Unlocking Characters

As you progress through the game and defeat bosses, new characters will become available to play as your main character or partner. Each character has unique abilities that can significantly alter gameplay and open up new routes in levels.

Cream & Cheese: Unlocked early in the game. Cream's flight ability is invaluable for reaching high platforms and bypassing obstacles.
Knuckles: Unlocked after a certain point. Knuckles' gliding and climbing abilities allow access to vertical paths and break certain objects.
Amy: Unlocked later. Amy's hammer attacks can be powerful, and her double jump provides extra height.
Shadow: Unlocked towards the end of the main story. Shadow's speed and Chaos Control ability make him a formidable character.

Post-Game Content

After completing the main story, especially with all Chaos Emeralds, additional content and challenges become available.

True Ending: Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds before the final boss fight unlocks the true ending and a special final boss encounter.
Super Sonic: With all Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic during the final boss battle, granting invincibility and enhanced speed.
