Controls (Advanced/Trick Specific)
Mastering the slopes of SSX 3 requires more than just basic steering. This section delves into the nuanced controls for executing advanced tricks, maximizing your score, and chaining together impressive combos. Understanding these specific inputs is key to becoming a true Freeride master.
Grabs & Tweaks
Grabs are the bread and butter of your trick repertoire. While airborne, holding down any of the four Grab buttons (typically L1, L2, R1, R2 on PlayStation, or their Xbox equivalents) will initiate a grab. The longer you hold it, the more points you earn. To truly elevate your score, you need to Tweak your grabs.
- Initiating a Grab: While in the air, press and hold any of the four Grab buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2).
- Tweaking a Grab: While holding a Grab button, use the Left Analog Stick or D-Pad to move your character's body. For example, holding L1 and pushing the Left Analog Stick left might result in a "Method Tweak," while pushing it right could be a "Stalefish Tweak." Experiment with different directions for each grab button to discover all possible tweaks.
- Hold for Points: The longer you maintain a grab (and especially a tweak), the higher your trick score will be. Be mindful of your landing!
Flips & Spins
Flips and Spins are essential for adding variety and multiplying your trick scores. These are performed using the Left Analog Stick or D-Pad in conjunction with the Jump button.
- Spins: As you launch off a jump, hold the Left Analog Stick or D-Pad left or right. The longer you hold it, the more rotations you'll perform (e.g., 180, 360, 720). Release the stick before landing to stop spinning.
- Flips: As you launch off a jump, hold the Left Analog Stick or D-Pad up (for a Backflip) or down (for a Frontflip). Like spins, the duration you hold the stick dictates the number of rotations.
- Combining Flips and Spins: For truly massive scores, combine these. For instance, launch off a jump, hold Left Analog Stick up-left for a Backflip 360, then add a grab for even more points.
Uber Tricks (Super Tricks)
Uber Tricks are your character's signature, high-scoring moves. These can only be performed when your Uber Trick Meter (located at the bottom of the screen) is full. Filling this meter is achieved by performing regular tricks, grinding, and avoiding bails.
- Activating Uber Tricks: When your Uber Trick Meter is full, press the two Grab buttons on one side simultaneously (e.g., L1 + L2 for a Left Uber Trick, or R1 + R2 for a Right Uber Trick).
- Unique Animations: Each character has a unique set of Uber Tricks, often with spectacular animations.
- Uber Trick Combos: You can chain multiple Uber Tricks together if you have enough airtime and a full Uber Trick Meter. This is crucial for achieving high scores in Freeride and Slopestyle events.
Landing & Balance
A perfect landing is as important as the trick itself. Bailing will cost you valuable time and reduce your Uber Trick Meter.
- Landing Straight: Try to land with your board as flat as possible. If you land at an angle, you risk losing balance.
- Using the Right Analog Stick: If you feel yourself losing balance after a landing, gently nudge the Right Analog Stick in the opposite direction of your lean to regain stability. This is your primary tool for recovering from imperfect landings.
- Pre-Winding for Spins: For faster spins, you can "pre-wind" your character by holding the Left Analog Stick in the desired spin direction *before* leaving the jump. This will initiate the spin more quickly once airborne.
