Basic Gameplay Mechanics

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic utilizes the d20 System, adapted from the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Roleplaying Game rules. Combat is turn-based, with time divided into discrete rounds of approximately six seconds. Combatants act and react simultaneously, but the number of actions each can perform per round is limited. Players can configure the combat system to pause automatically at specific events or at the end of each round, offering tactical control.

The game features an alignment system that tracks your actions, from simple dialogue choices to major plot decisions, influencing whether your character serves the light or dark side of the Force. This system allows for significant gameplay alternatives and character development.

While KOTOR II used the original Knights of the Old Republic game engine, many technical aspects, including character warping and combat detection glitches, remained. The core gameplay and graphics were largely a direct pull from the first title, though KOTOR II did introduce improvements such as expanded character skill development options and greater influence over party members' moral alignment.
