Dialogue & Choices

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, dialogue choices shape your alignment and Force powers. Learn how conversations influence the Light Side or Dark Sid.

Dialogue & Choices

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, your dialogue choices are far more than flavor text; they are the primary driver of your character's alignment, influencing both the story and your available Force powers. Every significant conversation presents an opportunity to lean towards the Light Side or the Dark Side of the Force, or to remain neutral. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for optimizing your playthrough, whether you aim for a benevolent Jedi Master or a ruthless Sith Lord.

Understanding Alignment Shifts

Most dialogue options will have a clear leaning. Generally:

  • Light Side Choices: These often involve compassion, selflessness, honesty, and seeking peaceful resolutions. They typically grant Light Side Points.
  • Dark Side Choices: These usually involve aggression, selfishness, deception, intimidation, and violence. They typically grant Dark Side Points.
  • Neutral Choices: Some options are purely informational or pragmatic and will not significantly impact your alignment.

Your alignment is represented by a bar on your character screen. Moving towards either extreme (fully Light or fully Dark) unlocks powerful Force powers and can alter how certain NPCs react to you or even change quest outcomes.

Key Dialogue Encounters & Strategic Choices

Here are some early-game examples of critical dialogue choices and their consequences:

Taris - Upper City

  • Gurney the Gambler (Javyar's Cantina):
    • Light Side Path: Offer to help Gurney pay off his debt to the Exchange. Speak to the Exchange Representative outside the cantina. You can persuade or intimidate him to reduce the debt, then pay the remaining 100 credits yourself. This grants Light Side Points and Gurney's gratitude.
    • Dark Side Path: Demand a cut of Gurney's future winnings or refuse to help him entirely. Alternatively, you can pay off his debt and then demand he work for you. This grants Dark Side Points.
  • Mission Vao's Brother, Griff (Upper City Cantina):
    • Light Side Path: When Mission asks for help finding Griff, agree without demanding payment. Later, when you find Griff in the Lower City, encourage him to reconcile with Mission. This earns Light Side Points and strengthens your bond with Mission.
    • Dark Side Path: Demand payment from Mission to help find Griff. When you find Griff, you can extort him or tell him to stay away from Mission. This earns Dark Side Points.

Taris - Lower City

  • Gadons' Hideout - Zaalbar's Imprisonment:
    • Light Side Path: When confronted by the Black Vulkars, choose to defend Zaalbar and demand his release without violence if possible (using Persuade/Intimidate). If combat is unavoidable, ensure you defeat the Vulkars to free him. This earns Light Side Points and Zaalbar as a companion.
    • Dark Side Path: You can choose to leave Zaalbar to his fate or even join the Black Vulkars in attacking him. This earns Dark Side Points.
  • Davik Kang's Estate - Canderous Ordo:
    • Light Side Path: When Canderous offers to help you escape Taris, express concern for the innocent people on the planet or question the morality of his methods. While you must work with him to escape, your dialogue can still reflect a Light Side stance.
    • Dark Side Path: Embrace Canderous's ruthlessness and express eagerness for the chaos or profit involved in the escape.

Companion Influence

Your choices also affect your companions. Engaging in dialogue that aligns with their personal philosophies can increase their influence and unlock new conversations or even quests. Conversely, choices that contradict their beliefs can lead to disapproval. For example:

  • Carth Onasi: Generally approves of Light Side, honorable actions, and honesty. Disapproves of deception and cruelty.
  • Mission Vao: Approves of helping the downtrodden and standing up to bullies. Disapproves of exploiting others.
  • Bastila Shan: Strongly favors Light Side choices and adherence to the Jedi Code. Strongly disapproves of Dark Side actions.
  • Canderous Ordo: Respects strength, cunning, and decisive action, regardless of morality. Disapproves of weakness or indecisiveness.

Pay attention to their reactions after major dialogue choices; sometimes they will comment directly on your decisions, indicating their approval or disapproval.

Replaying for Different Outcomes

Given the depth of the dialogue system, Knights of the Old Republic is highly replayable. Consider a dedicated Light Side run followed by a Dark Side run to experience the full spectrum of story variations, character interactions, and unique Force powers. Saving frequently before major dialogue encounters allows you to experiment with different responses and see their immediate impact.
