Resource Management
Effective resource management is the bedrock of success in Starbound. From your first crash-landing to exploring distant galaxies, understanding how to acquire, store, and utilize your materials will dictate your progress and survival. This section will guide you through the essential strategies for keeping your inventory and crafting stations well-stocked.
Early Game Scavenging and Survival
Upon crash-landing, your immediate priority is to gather basic materials to craft essential tools and shelter. Don't underestimate the importance of every single block and plant you encounter.
- Wood: Chop down trees using your Matter Manipulator (default key: left-click). Wood is crucial for crafting your first Wooden Workbench, Wooden Chests, and basic tools like the Stone Axe and Stone Pickaxe.
- Stone: Mine stone blocks found underground or in rocky outcrops. Stone is used for the aforementioned tools and for building basic shelters.
- Plant Fibre: Collect tall grass and leafy plants. Plant Fibre is vital for crafting Bandages (your primary early-game healing item) and Sleeping Bags.
- Food: Hunt small creatures or gather wild crops. Cook raw food at a Campfire (crafted from Wood) to increase its hunger restoration and remove negative status effects. Prioritize cooking as soon as possible.
- Coal: Found in shallow caves and underground. Coal is your first fuel source for your Campfire and later for your ship's fuel tank. Always gather more than you think you need.
Establishing Your Base and Storage
Once you have a basic shelter, focus on expanding your storage and crafting capabilities. A well-organized base saves time and prevents inventory headaches.
- Crafting Stations:
- Wooden Workbench: Your first crafting station, essential for basic tools and furniture.
- Furnace: Crafted from Stone and Wood. Used to smelt ores into bars (e.g., Copper Ore into Copper Bars).
- Anvil: Crafted from Iron Bars (smelted from Iron Ore). Essential for crafting metallic tools, weapons, and armor.
- Spinning Wheel: Crafted from Wood and Plant Fibre. Used to craft fabrics and threads.
- Storage:
- Wooden Chests: The most basic storage, crafted from Wood. Craft many of these early on.
- Storage Lockers: Later, you can craft larger, more durable storage options using metal bars.
- Organization: Dedicate chests to specific resource types (e.g., one for Ores, one for Crafting Materials, one for Food, one for Blocks). This makes finding items much faster.
Mining Strategies and Ore Acquisition
Mining is a core activity for resource gathering. Understanding ore distribution and efficient mining techniques is key.
- Ore Tiers: Ores appear in increasing depth and difficulty:
- Copper Ore: Found close to the surface on nearly all planets.
- Iron Ore: Deeper than Copper, also common.
- Silver Ore: Deeper than Iron, less common.
- Gold Ore: Deeper than Silver, less common.
- Platinum Ore: Found on more dangerous planets and deeper levels.
- Diamond: Very deep, rare, and valuable.
- Durasteel Ore, Solarium Ore, Aegisalt Ore, Ferozium Ore: These advanced ores are found on higher-tier planets and are crucial for end-game gear.
- Efficient Mining:
- Upgrade your Pickaxe: Always use the highest-tier pickaxe you can craft. This increases mining speed and block damage.
- Light Sources: Carry plenty of Torches (Wood + Plant Fibre) or a Mining Helmet to illuminate caves and tunnels, preventing falls and spotting hidden ores.
- "Branch Mining": Dig a main shaft downwards, then create horizontal tunnels every few blocks. This exposes a large area of blocks efficiently.
- Beware of Hazards: Underground areas are often home to dangerous monsters, lava, and traps. Always be prepared for combat and carry healing items.
Farming and Sustainable Food Sources
Reliance on hunting can be unreliable. Establishing a farm provides a consistent and renewable food supply.
- Acquiring Seeds:
- Wild Crops: Break wild plants like Corn, Wheat, Potatoes, and Rice to obtain their respective seeds.
- Merchants: Later, you can purchase seeds from agricultural merchants in colonies or the Outpost.
- Setting up a Farm:
- Till Soil: Use a Hoe (crafted from Wood and Copper/Iron Bars) to till dirt blocks into farmable soil.
- Plant Seeds: Select seeds from your hotbar and plant them on tilled soil.
- Watering: Crops grow faster when watered. Use a Watering Can (crafted from Copper/Iron Bars) or set up an automated irrigation system later.
- Light: Ensure your crops have adequate light, either from natural sunlight or artificial light sources like Fluorescent Lights.
- Harvesting: Once fully grown, interact with the crops to harvest both the food item and new seeds.
- Advanced Farming: Consider building a greenhouse on your ship or a dedicated farm planet for optimal growth and protection from environmental hazards.
Fuel Management for Space Travel
Your ship requires fuel to travel between star systems. Managing your fuel supply is critical for exploration.
- Early Game Fuel:
- Coal: Your primary early-game fuel. Mine large quantities on starting planets.
- Wood: Can also be used as fuel, but less efficient than Coal.
- Mid to Late Game Fuel:
- Liquid Erchius Fuel: The most efficient fuel source. Found in Erchius Mining Facilities (accessible via the main questline) and later on moons.
- Erchius Mining: When mining Erchius on moons, be prepared for low gravity, dangerous creatures, and the constant threat of the Erchius Ghost. Bring plenty of healing items and a good weapon.
- Fuel Condensers: Eventually, you can craft a Fuel Condenser to convert raw materials into Erchius Fuel, making fuel acquisition much easier.
- Fuel Efficiency: Short jumps between planets in the same system consume less fuel than jumps to new systems. Plan your routes to conserve fuel.
Managing Your Inventory and Hotbar
A cluttered inventory can slow you down and lead to lost items. Develop good habits early on.
- Regular Storage: Frequently return to your base to offload excess materials into your organized chests.
- Hotbar Setup: Arrange your hotbar (slots 1-10) for quick access to frequently used items:
- Slot 1: Matter Manipulator
- Slot 2: Primary Weapon
- Slot 3: Secondary Weapon/Shield
- Slot 4: Healing Item (e.g., Bandages, Salve)
- Slot 5: Light Source (e.g., Torches, Flashlight)
- Slots 6-10: Tools (Pickaxe, Axe, Hoe, Watering Can), Food, or frequently used blocks.
- Trash Can: Don't be afraid to use the trash can icon in your inventory for truly useless items to free up space.
- Ship Locker: Your ship's built-in locker provides convenient storage while exploring. Use it for items you might need on the go but don't want in your main inventory.
