Bait
Bait is an essential consumable item in Stardew Valley that significantly increases your chances of catching fish when using a fishing rod. Without bait, fishing becomes much less effective, with a higher chance of catching trash or nothing at all. Mastering bait usage is key to successful fishing and completing the Fish Tank bundles.
There are several types of bait available in Stardew Valley, each with slightly different properties, though the most common and generally useful is simply called 'Bait'.
Types of Bait and How to Obtain Them:
- Bait: This is the standard bait. You can craft it once you reach Fishing Level 2. The recipe is 1 Bug Meat. You can also purchase it from Willy at the Fish Shop for 5g each.
- Wild Bait: This is a more advanced bait that can be crafted once you reach Fishing Level 8. The recipe is 1 Bug Meat, 1 Slime, and 1 Sweet Gem Berry. Wild Bait has a chance to catch two fish at once and increases the bite rate.
- Magic Bait: This rare bait can be obtained from the Traveling Cart for 1,000g on Fridays and Sundays, or sometimes found in Treasure Chests while fishing. Magic Bait allows you to catch any fish regardless of season or time of day, and it never runs out.
How to Use Bait:
- Craft or Purchase Bait: Ensure you have a supply of Bait.
- Equip Your Fishing Rod: Make sure your Fiberglass Rod or Iridium Rod is equipped.
- Apply Bait: Open your inventory, select the Bait, and right-click on your equipped fishing rod. You'll see a small bait icon appear on the rod.
- Fish as Normal: Cast your line and play the fishing mini-game. The bait will be consumed after each successful catch or after a certain amount of time if no fish bites.
Where to Find Bug Meat:
Bug Meat is primarily obtained from killing bugs in the Mines, especially in the Bug Lair on level 80. It can also be dropped by other insect-like creatures.
Tips for Using Bait:
- Always Use Bait: For any serious fishing, always have bait applied to your rod.
- Crafting is Cheaper: Crafting Bait from Bug Meat is generally more cost-effective than buying it from Willy.
- Save Magic Bait: Magic Bait is incredibly powerful and should be saved for specific, difficult-to-catch fish or for when you need to complete a bundle quickly.
- Bait for Crab Pots: While the fishing rod uses bait to increase catch rates, Crab Pots also require bait to function at all.
Having a good stock of Bait is crucial for efficient fishing, whether you're trying to catch specific fish for recipes, quests, or the Community Center bundles. It transforms fishing from a sometimes frustrating activity into a reliable source of income and resources.
