Scarecrows

Scarecrows are essential early-game items in Stardew Valley that protect your crops from crows. Without a scarecrow, crows will periodically appear and eat your planted crops, reducing your harvest. Placing a scarecrow within range of your crops ensures they remain safe.

How to Obtain Scarecrows:

  • Crafting: The most common way to get scarecrows is by crafting them. Once you reach Farming Level 1, you will learn the recipe for the basic Scarecrow. The recipe requires 50 Wood and 1 Coal. Coal can be obtained by mining in the Mines, breaking rocks, or purchasing it from Clint.
  • The Strawman: This is a unique scarecrow that can be obtained by completing the “The Lost Thing” quest. This quest is triggered by finding a Lost Book in the Secret Woods. After completing the quest, you will receive the Strawman as a reward.
  • Seasonal Scarecrows: Throughout the year, you may receive unique scarecrow dess as gifts from villagers or find them in the Traveling Cart. These are purely cosmetic and function identically to the basic Scarecrow.
  • The Junimo Kart Scarecrow: After achieving 100,000 points in the Junimo Kart arcade game at the Stardrop Saloon, you will unlock the Junimo Kart Scarecrow.
  • The Void Calico Scarecrow: This scarecrow is obtained by completing the “A Winter Mystery” quest.
  • The Spooky Scarecrow: This scarecrow can be purchased from the Traveling Cart for a variable price.
  • The Elegant Scarecrow: This scarecrow is obtained by completing the “The Mysterious Qi” quest.

How to Use Scarecrows:

Once crafted, simply select the Scarecrow from your inventory and right-click on the ground where you want to place it. A scarecrow has an area of effect that covers an 8-tile radius around it (a 5x5 square with the corners removed). Ensure that your crops are within this radius to be protected.

Placement Strategy:

  • Centralize: Place scarecrows in central locations to cover the largest possible area of your farm.
  • Multiple crops: If you have large fields of crops, you may need multiple scarecrows to ensure full coverage.
  • Pathways: Avoid placing scarecrows directly on farm paths if possible, to maximize the space available for crops.

Scarecrows are a fundamental part of successful farming in Stardew Valley, preventing crop loss and ensuring a bountiful harvest.
