Story/Plot
Unlike its predecessor, Super Mario Bros. 2 plunges players into a fantastical dream world rather than the familiar Mushroom Kingdom. The narrative begins with Mario experiencing a vivid dream. He ascends a long staircase, opens a door, and finds himself in a strange, new land. A mysterious voice calls out for help, revealing that the land of Subcon is under the tyrannical rule of the frog king, Wart, and his mischievous minions. Upon waking, Mario recounts his dream to Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad. To their astonishment, they discover the very same dream world when they venture out for a picnic and stumble upon a hidden cave leading to Subcon.
The Quest to Defeat Wart
The primary objective of the game is to liberate Subcon from Wart's grasp. This involves traversing seven distinct worlds, each culminating in a boss encounter. To ultimately confront Wart, the heroes must collect a specific item: the Magic Potion. This potion, when thrown, creates a temporary door to a subspace, where various power-ups and coins can be found. Crucially, it's also where the key to defeating Wart is located.

The culmination of the story sees the heroes successfully feeding Wart enough vegetables to defeat him, freeing Subcon from his tyranny. The dream then ends, and Mario awakens, leaving players to ponder the true nature of their adventure.
