World 2 Fortress: Morton's Keep

Welcome to Morton's Keep, the formidable fortress of World 2! This level introduces several new challenges and enemies, so come prepared. A Fire Flower or Raccoon Leaf is highly recommended for navigating the tricky sections and dealing with the Hammer Bros.

Fortress Layout and Navigation

The fortress is a linear, side-scrolling level with a few vertical sections. The primary hazards here are the Hot Foots, fire-breathing statues that patrol specific platforms, and the ever-present Dry Bones, skeletal Koopa Troopas that reassemble themselves after being stomped.

  1. Initial Gauntlet:
    • Upon entering, you'll immediately encounter a series of platforms guarded by Hot Foots. Time your jumps carefully to avoid their fireballs.
    • Proceed right, dealing with the occasional Dry Bones. Remember, stomping them only temporarily disables them; a fireball or a tail whip from a Raccoon Mario is more effective for a permanent clear.
  2. First Vertical Shaft:
    • You'll reach a vertical shaft with moving platforms. Ascend cautiously, avoiding contact with the ceiling or floor as the platforms shift.
    • At the top, you'll find a small alcove to the right. Inside is a hidden block containing a Super Mushroom if you're small Mario, or a Coin if you're already powered up.
  3. Second Horizontal Stretch:
    • Continue right. This section features more Hot Foots and Dry Bones. Keep an eye out for a hidden block near the ceiling that contains a Coin.
    • You'll encounter a series of small, crumbling blocks. Run across them quickly before they disappear beneath you.
  4. Second Vertical Shaft & Hidden Power-Up:
    • Another vertical shaft awaits. This one has more aggressive Hot Foots.
    • Secret: As you ascend, look for a breakable block on the left wall. If you have a Raccoon Leaf, you can fly up and break it to reveal a hidden pipe. This pipe leads to a secret room containing a 1-Up Mushroom and several Coins. This is an excellent opportunity to stock up!
  5. Pre-Boss Area:
    • After the second vertical shaft, you'll find a short horizontal stretch leading to the boss door. There are usually a few more Dry Bones here.
    • Make sure you're powered up before entering the boss room. If you lost your power-up, try to backtrack to the hidden block in the first vertical shaft for a chance at a Super Mushroom.

Boss Battle: Morton Koopa Jr.

Morton Koopa Jr. is the boss of this fortress. He's a formidable opponent, but with the right strategy, he's manageable.

  • Morton's Attacks:
    • Magic Wand: Morton will shoot magic blasts from his wand. These can be dodged by jumping or moving quickly.
    • Ground Pound: Morton will occasionally jump high and attempt a ground pound, which can stun Mario if he's on the ground. Jump to avoid the shockwave.
  • Strategy:
    • The key to defeating Morton is to jump on his head three times.
    • Wait for Morton to land after a jump or after he finishes a magic attack.
    • Jump on his head, then quickly move away to avoid his retaliatory magic or ground pound.
    • Repeat this process two more times.
    • If you have a Fire Flower, fireballs can stun him briefly, making it easier to land a jump. However, fireballs do not damage him directly.

Once Morton is defeated, he will retreat, and you'll receive a special item: the Magic Wand. This signifies your victory and allows you to proceed to the next stage of World 2!
