Item Usage & Counters

Items can drastically shift the tide of battle in Super Smash Bros., turning a losing match into a triumphant comeback or solidifying an already dominant lead. Understanding how to effectively use and counter common items is crucial for any aspiring Smash master.

Offensive Items: Unleash the Pain

  • Smash Ball: This glowing orb is the holy grail of items. Breaking it grants you a Final Smash, a character-specific, devastating attack.
    • Usage: Prioritize breaking the Smash Ball. Use quick, multi-hit attacks or projectiles to chip away at its health. Once obtained, wait for an opportune moment when opponents are grouped or vulnerable to unleash your Final Smash.
    • Counters:
      • Denial: Focus your attacks on the Smash Ball to prevent opponents from getting it.
      • Evasion: If an opponent has the Smash Ball, maintain distance, use shields, and be prepared to air dodge or roll away from their Final Smash. Some Final Smashes can be avoided by staying off-stage.
  • Ray Gun: A projectile weapon that fires a continuous beam of energy.
    • Usage: Great for racking up damage from a distance and edge-guarding. The beam can also interrupt recoveries.
    • Counters:
      • Shielding: The Ray Gun's beam can be shielded, though it will deplete your shield over time.
      • Reflect/Absorb: Characters with reflect or absorb abilities (e.g., Fox's Reflector, Ness's PSI Magnet) can turn the Ray Gun's shots back on the user or heal from them.
      • Approach: Close the distance quickly to force the user into close-quarters combat where the Ray Gun is less effective.
  • Home-Run Bat: A powerful melee weapon that can launch opponents off-screen at high percentages.
    • Usage: Charge a smash attack with the bat for a one-hit KO. It's most effective against opponents with high damage.
    • Counters:
      • Disarm: Attack the opponent holding the bat to make them drop it.
      • Spacing: Keep your distance from an opponent wielding the bat, especially if you have high damage.
      • Shielding: A fully charged bat swing can break a shield, but a quick shield can block an uncharged attack.

Defensive & Utility Items: Turn the Tables

  • Heart Container: Restores a significant amount of your character's damage percentage.
    • Usage: Grab it immediately, especially if you're at high damage. It's a lifesaver.
    • Counters:
      • Steal: Prioritize grabbing the Heart Container before your opponent does.
      • Knock Away: If an opponent is trying to grab it, hit them away from it.
  • Super Mushroom: Temporarily increases your character's size and attack power.
    • Usage: Grab it to become a larger, more threatening presence. Your attacks will have increased range and knockback.
    • Counters:
      • Evasion: Large characters are easier to hit. Focus on dodging and waiting for the effect to wear off.
      • Projectile Spam: Keep your distance and pepper them with projectiles.
  • Starman: Grants temporary invincibility.
    • Usage: Grab it and go on the offensive! You can run through opponents and attacks without taking damage. Great for recovering from a disadvantage.
    • Counters:
      • Avoidance: There's no direct counter to invincibility. Your best bet is to run and hide until the effect wears off.
      • Edge-guarding: If they're invincible and off-stage, they can still be gimped if they miss their recovery.

Projectile Items: Ranged Threat

  • Poké Ball: Releases a random Pokémon that will assist you in battle.
    • Usage: Throw it towards opponents. The Pokémon's effect is random, but usually beneficial.
    • Counters:
      • Distance: Keep your distance from the released Pokémon, as many have wide-ranging attacks.
      • Shielding: Many Pokémon attacks can be shielded.
      • Attack the Pokémon: Some Pokémon can be attacked and defeated, removing their threat.
  • Bomb-Omb: A walking bomb that explodes after a short fuse or when hit.
    • Usage: Throw it at opponents or use it as a trap. Be careful not to get caught in the blast yourself!
    • Counters:
      • Throw Back: If an opponent throws a Bomb-Omb, hit it back at them or throw it off-stage.
      • Shielding: Shielding can protect you from the blast, but will take significant shield damage.
      • Distance: Stay clear of its explosion radius.
