Progression & Leveling — Sword of the Sea Guide

Progress and strengthen in Sword of the Sea. Collect relics and awaken powers to enhance your Rider and Hoversword without traditional leveling.

Progression & Leveling

In Sword of the Sea, your journey isn't about traditional experience points or character levels. Instead, progression is tied directly to the restoration of the world and the enhancement of your abilities through the collection of ancient relics and the awakening of dormant powers. This guide will detail the most efficient ways to strengthen your Rider and your Hoversword, allowing you to traverse the vast, sunken landscapes and overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Awakening the Hoversword

Your primary method of progression revolves around the Hoversword itself. As you explore and uncover the secrets of the world, you'll find ancient artifacts that imbue your sword with new capabilities. These aren't just cosmetic changes; they unlock new movement options, combat maneuvers, and environmental interactions.

  • The Sunken Blade Fragment: Your first major upgrade. Located in the Whispering Grotto, a hidden cave accessible after clearing the initial Maelstrom in the Azure Depths. This fragment unlocks the "Dash" ability, allowing for quick bursts of speed both on and off the Hoversword. To acquire it, you'll need to solve the Grotto's light puzzle by reflecting the sun's rays through three ancient prisms.
  • The Tidal Surge Core: Found within the heart of the Leviathan's Maw, a colossal skeletal remains in the Crimson Shallows. This core grants your Hoversword the "Wave Rider" ability, enabling you to skim across vertical surfaces of water, opening up new pathways and traversal opportunities. Be prepared for a challenging encounter with a Deep Lurker guardian.
  • The Sky-Whisper Gem: Perched atop the highest peak of the Cloudspire Peaks, accessible only after mastering the "Wave Rider" ability. This gem bestows the "Air Glide" ability, allowing you to briefly hover and extend your jumps, crucial for reaching previously inaccessible areas. The climb is treacherous, so look for updrafts and use your Dash strategically.

Rider Enhancements: Echoes of the Past

Beyond your Hoversword, your Rider's personal strength and resilience can be improved by collecting Echoes of the Past. These shimmering fragments are scattered throughout the world, often in well-hidden locations or as rewards for completing environmental puzzles.

  • Health Echoes: These increase your Rider's maximum health.
    • First Health Echo: Located behind the waterfall in the Verdant Oasis, just off the main path. Requires a well-timed Hoversword jump to reach.
    • Second Health Echo: Reward for successfully navigating the timed obstacle course in the Sunken City of Eldoria. This course becomes available after activating the city's central power conduit.
    • Third Health Echo: Found within the belly of the Stone Golem in the Petrified Forest. Defeating the Golem is mandatory to access this upgrade.
  • Stamina Echoes: These expand your Rider's stamina bar, allowing for longer dashes, more frequent special Hoversword abilities, and extended wall-running.
    • First Stamina Echo: Hidden within a cracked wall in the Crystal Caves. Use your Hoversword's Dash to break through the weak point.
    • Second Stamina Echo: Awarded for completing all three challenges at the Trial of Winds in the Sky-Archipelago. These challenges test your mastery of the "Air Glide" ability.
    • Third Stamina Echo: Discovered after activating all five ancient beacons in the Dune Sea. Each beacon requires a unique environmental puzzle solution.

Unlocking Ancient Runes: Combat Prowess

Combat in Sword of the Sea is fluid and relies on your mastery of the Hoversword. However, you can unlock Ancient Runes that grant passive bonuses or new combat techniques. These are typically found in challenging combat arenas or as rewards for defeating powerful Guardians.

  • Rune of Swift Strikes: Increases your Hoversword's attack speed. Acquired after defeating the Ironclad Sentinel in the Forgotten Foundry. This boss requires precise parrying and counter-attacks.
  • Rune of Deflecting Flow: Grants a chance to deflect incoming projectiles when performing a perfect block. Found after clearing the Shadowed Arena, a timed combat challenge in the Abyssal Chasm.
  • Rune of Empowered Dash: Your Dash ability now deals minor damage to enemies you pass through. Rewarded for completing the "Whispers of the Deep" side quest, which involves tracking down and defeating three elusive Phantom Strikers across the world.

Strategic Exploration for Maximum Gain

While the main quest guides you, significant progression comes from diligent exploration. Always be on the lookout for:

  • Glowing Shards: These small, collectible items are found everywhere and contribute to minor stat boosts and unlock cosmetic options for your Rider and Hoversword. Prioritize collecting them as you traverse new areas.
  • Hidden Chambers: Many areas contain secret passages or rooms that often house Echoes of the Past or Ancient Runes. Look for subtle environmental clues like discolored rock, unusual plant growth, or faint light sources.
  • Environmental Puzzles: Solving these often leads to valuable rewards. Pay attention to your surroundings and how your Hoversword abilities can interact with the environment.

Remember, the world of Sword of the Sea is designed for discovery. Don't be afraid to deviate from the main path and explore every nook and cranny. The rewards for your curiosity are often the most impactful for your progression.
