Saving & Loading

Learn to save your progress in Sword of the Sea. Understand the automatic saves via The Whispering Winds for smooth journeys across the Sea of Serenity.

Saving & Loading

In the vast, ever-shifting sands of the Sea of Serenity, knowing how and when to preserve your progress is paramount. Sword of the Sea features a robust saving system designed to offer both convenience and strategic depth. Understanding its nuances will ensure your journey is as smooth as the dunes themselves.

Automatic Saves (The Whispering Winds)

The Whispering Winds serve as your silent guardian, automatically recording your progress at key moments. These auto-saves are invaluable for preventing significant loss of progress, especially during exploration or after completing major objectives.

  • Trigger Points: Auto-saves occur reliably in the following situations:
    • Upon entering a new major biome, such as the shimmering Sunken City of Azmar or the treacherous Crystal Canyons.
    • After successfully defeating a Guardian Spirit, like the Sand Serpent Guardian in the Shifting Sands.
    • When interacting with a Ancient Altar to unlock a new traversal ability, such as the Sand Dash or Wind Glide.
    • Upon discovering and activating a new Wayfinder Beacon, which also acts as a fast-travel point.
    • After completing a significant quest objective, indicated by a notification on your screen (e.g., "Quest Complete: The Lost Echoes").
  • Identifying Auto-Saves: A small, ethereal icon resembling a swirling vortex will briefly appear in the top-right corner of your screen, accompanied by a subtle chime, to indicate an auto-save has occurred.
  • Loading Auto-Saves: From the main menu, select "Load Game." You will see a list of your manual saves, and typically the most recent auto-save will be prominently displayed as "Last Auto-Save."

Manual Saves (The Traveler's Respite)

For those moments when you wish to meticulously control your progress, Sword of the Sea provides dedicated manual save points. These are crucial before attempting challenging encounters or exploring particularly dangerous areas.

Finding Respite: The Traveler's Monoliths

Manual saves can only be performed at Traveler's Monoliths. These ancient, glowing stone structures are scattered throughout the world. They are easily identifiable by their distinct blue luminescence and the faint hum they emit.

  • Locations:
    • Starting Area: The first Traveler's Monolith is located directly outside the Sanctuary of the First Wave, your initial spawn point.
    • Major Hubs: Expect to find at least one Monolith in every major hub area, such as the bustling Oasis of Whispers and the serene Sky Temple Ruins.
    • Pre-Boss Arenas: A Traveler's Monolith will always be strategically placed just before significant boss encounters, offering you a chance to save and prepare. For example, one stands guard at the entrance to the Lair of the Dune Leviathan.
    • Hidden Paths: Keep an eye out for these monoliths along less-traveled paths or at the culmination of challenging platforming sections. Their presence often signifies a valuable discovery or a difficult section ahead.

Performing a Manual Save

  1. Approach the Monolith: Navigate your character to within close proximity of a Traveler's Monolith.
  2. Interact: A prompt will appear on your screen (e.g., "Press [Action Button] to Interact"). Press the indicated button.
  3. Choose a Slot: The save menu will appear, displaying several empty or occupied save slots. Select an empty slot or an existing save you wish to overwrite.
  4. Confirm: Confirm your choice to save your current progress. A confirmation message will appear, and the Monolith's glow will briefly intensify.

Strategy Tip: It is highly recommended to maintain multiple manual save files, especially before attempting critical story missions or exploring new, unknown territories. This allows you to revert to an earlier state if you encounter an unforeseen challenge or wish to re-experience a particular section.

Loading a Game

Whether you're returning to the world of Sword of the Sea or need to reload a previous save, the process is straightforward.

  1. From the Main Menu: Select "Load Game."
  2. From the Pause Menu: During gameplay, press the "Pause" button (e.g., Options on PlayStation, Menu on Xbox, + on Switch) to open the pause menu. Select "Load Game."
  3. Select Your Save: A list of your available save files will be presented. Each entry will typically show:
    • The save slot number.
    • The date and time the save was created.
    • Your current location (e.g., "Oasis of Whispers," "Crystal Canyons - Upper Reaches").
    • Your current play time.
  4. Confirm Selection: Highlight the desired save file and confirm your selection to load your adventure from that point.

Important Note: Loading a game will always return you to the exact location and state you were in when that specific save was created. Any progress made after that save point will be lost if you choose to load an older file.
