Campaign Walkthrough: GDF

Welcome, Commander, to the GDF Campaign Walkthrough for Tempest Rising! This guide will provide you with detailed strategies, unit compositions, and objective breakdowns to ensure your success in defending humanity against the emerging threats. The GDF relies on robust defenses, well-rounded unit capabilities, and strategic resource management. Master these principles, and victory will be yours.

Mission 1: First Contact

This introductory mission focuses on establishing your initial base, securing vital resources, and fending off the first waves of the alien Dynast threat. Understanding basic GDF unit roles and build orders is key to survival.

Objective: Establish a Forward Operating Base

  • Initial Deployment: You begin with a Mobile Construction Vehicle (MCV), two Riflemen squads, and a Scorpion Tank. Your starting position is typically near a buildable area and a source of Tempest resources.
  • MCV Deployment: Immediately deploy your MCV near the designated build zone. This area is usually indicated by a green outline on your minimap. Prioritize building a Power Plant first to ensure sufficient energy for your structures, followed by a Refinery to begin resource extraction.
  • Resource Gathering: Once the Refinery is operational, dispatch your Harvester to collect Tempest resources from the nearest Tempest Field. Keep a close watch on your Harvester's health, as it is a prime target for early enemy scouts and can be vulnerable when returning to the Refinery.
  • Initial Defense: Position your two Riflemen squads to cover the primary approaches to your nascent base. The Scorpion Tank should patrol the immediate vicinity, acting as a mobile deterrent against any early Dynast probes.

Objective: Repel Initial Attacks

  • Enemy Composition: The first enemy assaults will consist primarily of low-tier Dynast units. Expect to face basic Dynast infantry, such as the Dynast Grunt, and potentially light vehicles like the Dynast Skitterer.
  • Recommended Build Order: After constructing your Refinery, immediately build a Barracks. This will allow you to train more Riflemen, bolstering your defensive capabilities. Following the Barracks, construct a Vehicle Bay to produce additional Scorpion Tanks, essential for dealing with early enemy vehicles.
  • Defensive Structures: As soon as resources allow, consider placing a Sentry Turret at key choke points or approaches leading into your base. These automated turrets provide excellent early-game deterrence and can significantly reduce the pressure on your infantry.
  • Micro-Management: During engagements, focus fire with your Scorpion Tanks on enemy vehicles to eliminate them quickly. use your Riflemen to suppress enemy infantry; if their "Suppressive Fire" ability is available, activate it to slow and damage enemy foot soldiers.

Objective: Secure Tempest Spire

  • Scouting: Once your base is secure and your initial defenses are in place, dispatch a Rifleman squad or a lone Scorpion Tank to scout towards the Tempest Spire location, which will be marked on your map. Be cautious of potential entrenched enemy positions or patrols along the route.
  • Assault Force: Assemble a small, yet effective, strike force. A good composition would be 3-4 Scorpion Tanks to absorb damage and deal with enemy vehicles, supported by 2-3 Riflemen squads to handle Dynast infantry. Ensure your units are fully healed before initiating the assault.
  • Engagement Strategy: Approach the Tempest Spire cautiously. You can expect resistance from Dynast infantry and possibly a light vehicle or two. Use your Scorpion Tanks to draw enemy fire and engage their vehicles, while your Riflemen focus on eliminating the Dynast foot soldiers.
  • Capture: Once enemy resistance around the Tempest Spire is eliminated, move a Rifleman squad onto the Spire itself. This action will initiate the capture process. Capturing the Tempest Spire provides a significant and steady income of Tempest resources, crucial for funding your war effort.

Mission 2: The Crimson Tide

This mission introduces more complex objectives, including assaulting an enemy outpost and rescuing stranded personnel, while also demanding a more robust base and army composition.

Objective: Destroy Dynast Outpost

  • Base Expansion: By this stage, you should have a stable economic foundation. If your current Tempest Field is depleted or you have access to another, consider building a second Refinery to maximize your resource income. Ensure your Power Plants are sufficient to support your growing infrastructure; upgrade them if necessary.
  • Advanced Units: To unlock more powerful GDF units, research and construct a Technology Center. This structure is vital for accessing units such as the Grizzly Tank and the Wolverine APC, which offer significant tactical advantages.
  • Recommended Army Composition: For this mission, a balanced force is crucial. Aim for a core of 4-5 Grizzly Tanks for their reliable anti-infantry and anti-vehicle capabilities. Supplement this with 2-3 Wolverine APCs, loaded with Riflemen or Grenadiers for infantry support and rapid deployment. Consider including 1-2 Kodiak Gunships for essential air support.
  • Approach Strategy: The Dynast Outpost is typically heavily defended, featuring static defenses like Plasma Turrets, along with a mixed force of Dynast infantry and vehicles. use your Kodiak Gunships to soften up enemy defenses from the air, focusing on eliminating key threats like anti-air units before your ground forces engage.
  • Flanking Maneuver: If the map layout permits, attempt to flank the Dynast Outpost to bypass its strongest frontal defenses. Employ your Wolverine APCs to quickly deploy infantry to secure advantageous positions or to target and destroy vulnerable structures from the flanks.

Objective: Rescue GDF Personnel

  • Intel and Location: GDF personnel are often held in small, lightly guarded encampments that are separate from the main Dynast Outpost. Your map will provide a general indicator of their location.
  • Detachment Force: Dispatch a smaller, faster-moving force to the rescue location. A suitable detachment would consist of 2 Wolverine APCs loaded with Riflemen. Speed is of the essence to minimize the risk to the captured personnel.
  • Eliminate Guards: These encampments are usually guarded by only one or two Dynast infantry squads. Overwhelm them quickly with concentrated fire from your APCs and dismounted troops.
  • Extraction: Once the area is cleared of enemies, the rescued GDF personnel will automatically begin moving towards your nearest friendly structure. Ensure their path is clear of any remaining enemy threats to guarantee their safe extraction.

Objective: Defend Main Base from Counter-Attack

  • Warning: Be prepared for a significant counter-attack from residual Dynast forces shortly after destroying their main outpost.
  • Reinforce Defenses: Before launching your primary assault on the outpost, ensure your main base has adequate defensive fortifications. Construct additional Sentry Turrets, and if air threats are anticipated, upgrade them to Missile Turrets. Strategically position your remaining tanks and infantry to cover all approaches.
  • Repair Facilities: Construct a Repair Bay within your base. This structure is invaluable for quickly mending damaged GDF vehicles during the intense counter-attack, allowing them to re-enter the fray.
  • Hold the Line: Your primary focus during the counter-attack should be on keeping your production facilities and Refineries operational. use your base defenses to attrition the enemy forces, and then send out your repaired and reinforced units to eliminate any remaining threats.

Mission 3: The Scarred Earth

This mission escalates the conflict with more advanced Dynast units and introduces the strategic importance of establishing secondary bases and using heavy artillery.

Objective: Neutralize Tempest Harvesters

  • New Threat: The Dynast will deploy their advanced Tempest Harvesters, which are crucial for their economy. These units are often protected by mobile escorts and can be supported by air units.
  • Air Superiority: The Dynast will likely deploy air units to defend their Harvesters. Invest in a Helipad and produce a few Kodiak Gunships. If available, research and build the advanced Eagle Fighter for dedicated air-to-air combat superiority.
  • Anti-Vehicle Focus: Dynast Harvesters are heavily armored and require units with high anti-vehicle damage. Ensure your army includes a significant number of Grizzly Tanks or, if unlocked, the powerful Mammoth Tank.
  • Hit and Run Tactics: Dynast Harvesters are frequently protected by mobile escorts. Consider employing hit-and-run tactics with fast units like Scorpion Tanks or Kodiak Gunships to eliminate these escorts before engaging the Harvester directly.
  • Target Priority: Your primary objective is to destroy the Tempest Harvesters. Crippling the Dynast's economy by eliminating their harvesting capabilities will prevent them from fielding their most powerful units and reinforcements.

Objective: Establish a Secondary Base

  • Strategic Location: The game will highlight a suitable location for a secondary base, often situated near another untapped Tempest Field or a strategically defensible choke point.
  • MCV Deployment: Construct a second MCV from your Vehicle Bay and dispatch it to the designated secondary base location.
  • Rapid Expansion: Upon deployment, quickly establish a Power Plant and a Refinery at the new base. Immediately prioritize building defensive structures, such as Sentry Turrets, as this new base will be vulnerable to enemy attack.
  • Resource Management: Ensure that both your primary and secondary bases have active Harvesters working. Efficiently manage your overall resource flow to support two separate production lines and maintain a strong military presence.

Objective: Destroy Dynast Command Center

  • Ultimate Force Composition: This is the final push of the mission. Assemble your most powerful and well-rounded army. This should include a significant number of Grizzly Tanks, Mammoth Tanks (if available), Kodiak Gunships for air support, and Wolverine APCs filled with Grenadiers or Rocket Troopers for specialized infantry roles.
  • Artillery Support: If you have unlocked the Longbow Artillery, use its devastating range to bombard the Dynast Command Center's defenses from a safe distance. This unit is incredibly effective against static enemy structures and can significantly weaken their defenses before your main assault.
  • Combined Arms Assault: Coordinate your attack meticulously. Use your air units to neutralize enemy anti-air defenses, employ artillery to soften up ground fortifications, and then advance with your main tank force. Infantry should be used to clear out any remaining enemy infantry or to capture strategic structures within the enemy base.
  • Sustained Assault: The Dynast Command Center will be heavily defended and may even produce units during your assault. Be prepared for a prolonged engagement and continuously reinforce your attacking force from your bases to maintain pressure and overcome enemy resistance.
