Campaign Walkthrough: Global Defense Forces (GDF)

Welcome, Commander, to the comprehensive walkthrough for the Global Defense Forces (GDF) campaign in Tempest Rising! This guide will provide you with actionable steps, crucial item locations, and strategic advice to conquer each mission. Prepare to lead the GDF through challenging scenarios, secure vital resources, and eliminate the Tempest threat.

Mission 1: First Contact

Objective: Establish a forward operating base and neutralize local Tempest presence.

  • Initial Deployment & Resource Gathering: Your starting forces consist of 3x GDF Riflemen and 1x Engineer. Immediately move your Engineer to the designated primary resource node (marked on your mini-map as a Tempest Shard Deposit near your starting position) to begin harvesting.
  • Base Construction Priority:
    1. Build a Power Plant to ensure sufficient energy for your base.
    2. Construct a Barracks next.
    3. Train an additional 2x Engineers from the Barracks to significantly accelerate resource gathering from the primary Shard Deposit.
  • Early Defense & Scouting:
    • Expect small skirmishes from Tempest Scavengers attacking from the north-east within the first 3-5 minutes. Position your initial Riflemen near your base entrance.
    • Construct a Watchtower at your base perimeter for early detection and defensive fire.
    • Once you have a steady income, train 2x GDF Scouts. Send them to explore the immediate vicinity, particularly to the west, where a secondary Tempest Shard Deposit can be found. Secure this with an Engineer and a Supply Depot for increased income.
  • Neutralize the Tempest Threat:
    • The primary Tempest encampment is located in the central valley, roughly equidistant from your main base and the secondary Shard Deposit.
    • Build a Vehicle Bay and produce 2x Grizzly Tanks. Combine these with your Riflemen and push towards the encampment.
    • Attack Strategy: Focus fire on their Tempest Spore Pods first (these spawn infantry), then their Tempest Harvesters (to cripple their economy), and finally any remaining defensive structures or infantry.
  • Bonus Objective: Abandoned GDF Supply Crate
    • Locate and secure the Abandoned GDF Supply Crate hidden behind a distinctive rock formation in the southern forest, near the edge of the map.
    • Reward: This grants a temporary resource boost of +500 Shards and +250 Credits, crucial for early expansion.

Mission 2: Shard Harvest

Objective: Secure three Tempest Shard deposits and defend them from Tempest incursions for 15 minutes.

  • Initial Resource Rush & First Deposit:
    • This mission emphasizes resource control and multi-front defense. Immediately deploy 3x Engineers to the closest Tempest Shard Deposit directly south of your starting position.
    • Begin constructing a Supply Depot and at least 2x Watchtowers at this location.
  • Defensive Perimeter & Mobile Force:
    • The Tempest will attack from multiple directions, often targeting your secured deposits.
    • Build at least 2x Watchtowers at each secured deposit. Upgrade them to Heavy Watchtowers as soon as possible for increased firepower and durability against heavier Tempest units.
    • Train 3x Grizzly Tanks and 2x GDF Medics. Group them together and assign them to a control group. This mobile defense force will patrol between the secured deposits, reinforcing threatened areas. Medics are crucial for keeping your tanks operational and reducing repair costs.
  • Securing Additional Deposits:
    • North-West Deposit: This deposit is heavily guarded by Tempest Lashers and a Tempest Spore Launcher. Use your mobile defense force to clear the area. Consider building a temporary Outpost near this deposit for faster reinforcement and Engineer deployment. Once secured, build 2x Heavy Watchtowers.
    • Eastern Plateau Deposit: Accessible via a narrow ramp on the eastern side of the map. This deposit is often targeted by Tempest Air units like Tempest Stingers and ground units from the east. Build a GDF Anti-Air Turret here in addition to 2x Heavy Watchtowers. Position your mobile force to intercept ground threats approaching the ramp.
  • Tech Advancement & Research:
    • Establish a Research Lab at your main base.
    • Prioritize researching Advanced Armor Plating for your vehicles. This will significantly enhance the survivability of your Grizzly Tanks and other armored units against the heavier Tempest units (e.g., Ravagers, Stalkers) you'll encounter in later waves.
    • Consider researching Improved Rifleman Training for stronger infantry defense at your base.
  • Critical Item: Prototype GDF Railgun Turret Blueprint
    • A Prototype GDF Railgun Turret Blueprint can be found in a destroyed GDF convoy wreck located in the far north-east corner of the map, often partially obscured by debris.
    • Action: Send a GDF Scout or Engineer to retrieve it.
    • Reward: Retrieving this allows you to construct a powerful, long-range defensive structure at your main base, ideal for deterring major Tempest pushes or protecting your Power Plants.
  • Holding the Line: As the timer counts down, Tempest attacks will intensify. Ensure your mobile force is constantly engaged, and repair damaged structures and units promptly. The mission ends once the 15-minute timer expires with all three deposits secured.

Mission 3: The Gauntlet

Objective: Escort a GDF Convoy through hostile territory to a designated extraction point in the north-west.

  • Convoy Composition & Primary Goal: The convoy consists of 2x GDF Transport Trucks and 1x GDF Armored Personnel Carrier (APC). Your primary goal is to keep these units alive; loss of any convoy unit results in mission failure.
  • Advance Scouting & Threat Elimination:
    • Immediately send 2x GDF Scouts ahead of the convoy's path. The convoy will follow a pre-determined route.
    • Use your Scouts to reveal ambushes and Tempest defensive positions. Prioritize destroying Tempest Spore Pods (infantry spawners) and Tempest Mortar Pits (long-range artillery) before the convoy reaches their range.
  • Defensive Formations & Unit Composition:
    • Your starting combat units should be augmented quickly. Build 4x Grizzly Tanks and 6x GDF Riflemen from your base.
    • Formation: Position your combat units around the convoy. A "V" formation with tanks leading and infantry flanking the convoy is effective for protecting against attacks from all sides. Keep Medics with your infantry and tanks.
    • Convoy Control: The convoy moves automatically. You can issue "Stop" commands to allow your forces to clear threats ahead or consolidate.
  • Chokepoint Strategy & Sentry Turrets:
    • The map features several narrow passes and canyon sections. These are prime locations for Tempest ambushes, often involving multiple infantry units and Stalkers.
    • Deploy GDF Sentry Turrets at these chokepoints. Build 2-3 at each major chokepoint to slow down enemy advances and provide significant additional firepower.
    • Important: Remember to retrieve your Sentry Turrets after the convoy passes to conserve resources and redeploy them at subsequent chokepoints.
  • Air Support & Rapid Response:
    • If your base can support it, construct a GDF Airfield early in the mission.
    • Deploy 2x GDF Hornets for aerial reconnaissance and quick elimination of isolated Tempest units or structures (especially Mortar Pits or Spore Launchers) that pose a direct threat to the convoy. Hornets are also excellent for clearing out clusters of Tempest Scavengers or Stingers.
  • Reinforcement Drop-off:
    • Approximately halfway through the mission, a GDF Reinforcement Beacon will appear in a clearing to the north of the convoy's path.
    • Action: Divert a small force (e.g., 2x Grizzly Tanks, 2x Riflemen) to secure the area around the beacon.
    • Reward: Once secured, you will receive 2x GDF Wolverine Light Tanks and 4x GDF Grenadiers. These units are excellent for dealing with clustered Tempest infantry and light vehicles, and should immediately join the main convoy escort.
  • Extraction Point Defense:
    • The final stretch to the extraction point (marked in the far north-west) will be heavily contested. Expect multiple waves of Tempest units, including Ravagers and potentially a Tempest Behemoth.
    • Focus all available firepower on clearing the path directly in front of the convoy. Use your Wolverine Tanks to flank and eliminate high-priority targets.
    • Once the convoy reaches the extraction zone, you must hold the line for 90 seconds against a final, intense Tempest assault from multiple directions. Deploy any remaining Sentry Turrets around the extraction point and use your mobile force to plug gaps.
    • Mission success is achieved once the timer expires and all convoy units are safe within the extraction zone.
