Keybindings and Customization
Navigating the sprawling, often unforgiving world of Daggerfall efficiently requires a firm grasp of its controls. While the game provides a default keybinding scheme, understanding how to customize these settings can dramatically improve your gameplay experience, especially when delving into dangerous dungeons or engaging in swift combat.
Accessing the Controls Menu
To view or modify your keybindings, follow these steps:
- Press the ESC key during gameplay. This will bring up the main Options menu.
- From the Options menu, select "Controls".
- Within the Controls menu, you'll see a list of actions and their currently assigned keys.
Default Keybindings (PC)
While customization is encouraged, it's essential to be familiar with the default setup. Here are some of the most crucial default keybindings:
- Movement:
- W: Move Forward
- A: Turn Left
- S: Move Backward
- D: Turn Right
- E: Strafe Left
- R: Strafe Right
- Spacebar: Jump
- Shift: Run (hold)
- Caps Lock: Toggle Always Run
- Interaction & Combat:
- Left Mouse Button: Attack / Interact (click on objects, talk to NPCs)
- Right Mouse Button: Block (hold)
- F: Sheath/Unsheath Weapon
- Q: Cast Spell (if equipped)
- Z: Use Potion/Item (if equipped to quick slot)
- Interface & Menus:
- Tab: Open Inventory / Character Sheet
- M: Open Map
- J: Open Journal
- C: Open Character Creation/Level Up Screen (during appropriate times)
- ESC: Open Options Menu (Save, Load, Exit, Controls, etc.)
Customizing Your Keybindings
Daggerfall allows for extensive remapping of almost every action. This is particularly useful for players who prefer a different layout (e.g., WASD for movement with mouse look, which wasn't standard in Daggerfall's original release but is often enabled through modern patches or DOSBox configurations). To rebind a key:
- Navigate to the "Controls" menu as described above.
- Scroll through the list to find the action you wish to change (e.g., "Move Forward").
- Click on the current key assigned to that action.
- Press the new key you wish to assign. The game will automatically update the binding.
- Repeat for any other actions you want to customize.
- Once satisfied, select "Accept" or "Done" to save your changes.
Recommended Customizations for Modern Play
Many modern players find the original Daggerfall controls somewhat archaic. Consider these changes for a more fluid experience:
- WASD Movement with Mouse Look: If you are using a Daggerfall Unity build or a DOSBox setup that allows for modern mouse look, rebind your movement keys to W, A, S, D for forward, strafe left, backward, and strafe right respectively. Then, ensure your mouse is set to control camera movement.
- Dedicated Strafe Keys: Assign Q and E to Strafe Left and Strafe Right for quick lateral movement during combat or exploration.
- Quick Item/Spell Slots: Daggerfall allows you to assign items and spells to quick slots. While the default might be number keys, consider binding your most frequently used potions (e.g., healing potions) or spells to easily accessible keys like Z, X, C, V.
- Combat Actions: If you find clicking for attack and block cumbersome, consider binding these to other mouse buttons if your mouse has them, or even keyboard keys if you prefer.
Experiment with different configurations until you find what feels most natural. A well-optimized control scheme can make all the difference in your adventures across the Iliac Bay.
