Transportation and Fast Travel
Navigating the vast expanse of the Iliac Bay in Daggerfall can be daunting. Understanding the various modes of transportation and efficient fast travel methods is crucial for any adventurer. While the world feels immense, you have several options to traverse its lands and seas.
On Foot: The Basics
Your journey begins and often continues on foot. While slow, walking allows for exploration, random encounters, and the discovery of hidden locations. Be mindful of your encumbrance; a heavily laden character will move significantly slower. Consider investing in the Athleticism skill to improve your movement speed and endurance.
Mounts: Speeding Up Land Travel
For more efficient land travel, especially across the wilderness between towns, a mount is invaluable. Horses can be purchased in most major cities from stables. The cost can vary, but a basic horse is a worthwhile early investment.
- Purchasing a Horse: Locate the stablemaster in any major city. They are usually found near the city gates or market districts. Interact with them to browse available horses.
- Mount Management: Once purchased, your horse will appear outside the stable. You can mount it by pressing the 'U' key (default). To dismount, press 'U' again. Be aware that horses can be killed in combat, so protect your investment!
- Horse Speed: While on a horse, your travel speed across the wilderness map and within towns will be significantly increased.
Ships: Inter-Regional Travel
When traveling between different regions of the Iliac Bay, such as from Daggerfall to Sentinel or Wayrest, ships are your primary mode of transport. These are essential for completing many quests that span across the provinces.
- Finding a Ship: Head to the docks in any coastal city. Look for a ship captain or harbormaster. They will usually be standing near the ships themselves.
- Choosing a Destination: Interact with the captain, and they will present you with a list of available destinations and their associated costs. The price will depend on the distance.
- Travel Time: Ship travel is a form of fast travel. Once you select your destination, time will pass, and you will arrive at the chosen port.
Fast Travel: The Map Screen
Daggerfall's most powerful transportation tool is its fast travel system, accessed via the world map. This allows you to instantly travel to any previously discovered location, or even to undiscovered locations if you have a quest pointing you there.
- Open the World Map: Press the 'M' key (default) to bring up the regional map.
- Zoom Out: Use the right-click button to zoom out to the provincial map, and then again to the full Iliac Bay map if needed.
- Select Destination: Click on the desired city, dungeon, or wilderness location. If the location is known to you (either visited or revealed by a quest), it will be highlighted.
- Initiate Travel: Once a destination is selected, a prompt will appear asking if you wish to travel there. Confirm your choice.
- Travel Options:
- "Travel to destination": This is the standard fast travel. Time will pass, and you will arrive at your destination. The duration depends on the distance and your chosen travel speed (walking, riding, or sailing).
- "Travel to destination (rest until arrival)": This option is useful if you are injured or low on spell points. You will automatically rest during the journey until you arrive, potentially recovering health and magic.
- Random Encounters: Be aware that during fast travel, especially over long distances, you may still encounter random events, such as ambushes by bandits or monsters. These will interrupt your travel, and you'll need to resolve them before continuing.
Teleportation: Advanced Magic
For the magically inclined, teleportation offers the ultimate in convenience, though it requires preparation and magical prowess.
- Recall Spell: This spell allows you to mark a specific location and then instantly return to it from anywhere in the world.
- Casting Recall: Cast the 'Recall' spell at your desired anchor point (e.g., inside a guild hall, your home, or a dungeon entrance). This sets your "anchor."
- Teleporting Back: Cast 'Recall' again from any other location, and you will instantly be transported back to your anchor.
- Limitations: You can only have one Recall anchor set at a time. Casting it again will overwrite the previous anchor.
- Mark and Recall Spells: These are two separate spells that work in conjunction. 'Mark' sets your anchor, and 'Recall' teleports you back to it. This functions identically to the single 'Recall' spell in practice.
- Teleport Spell: This powerful spell allows you to instantly teleport to any location you have previously visited. It requires a high level in Mysticism and significant Magicka.
- Usage: Cast 'Teleport'. A map will appear, allowing you to select any known location as your destination.
- Risk: Be cautious with 'Teleport' if your Mysticism skill is low, as a failed cast can result in you being teleported to a random, potentially dangerous, location.
Mastering these transportation methods will significantly enhance your Daggerfall experience, allowing you to efficiently complete quests, explore new territories, and manage your time effectively within the vast world of Tamriel.
