Alteration Magic Guide
Alteration magic in Morrowind is a versatile school focused on manipulating the physical world and the caster's own capabilities. It offers a wide array of utility spells that can enhance combat, exploration, and even social interactions. Mastering Alteration can provide sificant advantages, making it a valuable addition to any character's repertoire.
Alteration spells are distinct from Destruction or Conjuration in that they don't directly inflict damage or summon creatures. Instead, they focus on altering existing conditions, such as the environment, the player's attributes, or the properties of objects. This makes Alteration a cornerstone for strategic gameplay and creative problem-solving.
Key Alteration Spells and Their Uses
- Feather: Reduces the weight of carried items, allowing you to carry more loot without becoming over-encumbered. Essential for hoarders and explorers.
- Jump: Increases your jumping height, enabling access to higher ledges and shortcuts. Crucial for vertical exploration.
- Water Walking: Allows you to walk on the surface of water, opening up new travel routes and bypassing aquatic obstacles.
- Water Breathing: Grants the ability to breathe underwater indefinitely, essential for exploring submerged ruins and underwater caves.
- Shield: Creates a magical shield that absorbs a percentage of incoming physical damage. A vital defensive spell for any combatant.
- Fortify Attribute Spells (e.g., Fortify Strength, Fortify Agility): Temporarily boost your primary attributes, enhancing your combat effectiveness or skill checks.
- Open/Close Lock: Used to bypass locked doors and containers, though Security skills are often more reliable.
- Light: Illuminates dark areas, making exploration in dungeons and caves much easier.
Synergies and Advanced Uses
- Combining Feather and Jump: Allows for incredible mobility, enabling you to traverse vast distances quickly and reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
- Strategic Shielding: Casting Shield before engaging in combat can sificantly reduce incoming damage, especially against powerful foes.
- Exploration with Water Walking/Breathing: These spells can reveal hidden areas and treasures that would otherwise be unreachable.
- Spell Crafting: Create custom Alteration spells that combine multiple effects, such as a spell that grants both Feather and Jump, or a powerful Fortify Strength spell for boss fights.
The primary attribute for Alteration magic is Intelligence. Investing in this attribute and the Alteration skill itself will increase the Magicka cost and effectiveness of your spells. Many Alteration spells can be found as spell scrolls or learned from trainers, making it accessible to a wide range of character builds.
