Armor Skills Guide (Heavy Armor, Medium Armor, Light Armor)
In Morrowind, the type of armor you wear sificantly impacts your combat effectiveness and playstyle. Each armor skill category—Heavy, Medium, and Light—offers distinct advantages and disadvantages, influencing your defense, mobility, and even your ability to cast spells.
Heavy Armor provides the highest level of physical protection, making you incredibly resilient to direct damage. Characters specializing in Heavy Armor can withstand sificant punishment, making them ideal for front-line combat roles. However, this superior defense comes at a cost: Heavy Armor sificantly reduces your movement speed and can interfere with spellcasting, often increasing Magicka costs or even preventing spells from being cast altogether.
Medium Armor offers a balance between protection and mobility. It provides a respectable defensive bonus without the severe penalties associated with Heavy Armor. Characters using Medium Armor can move more freely and are less hindered in their spellcasting than those in Heavy Armor. This makes it a versatile choice for characters who need to be both durable and agile, such as warriors who also dabble in magic or nimble fighters.
Light Armor offers the least physical protection but provides the greatest mobility and the least interference with spellcasting. Characters who rely on dodging attacks or who are primarily spellcasters will find Light Armor to be the most beneficial. It allows for maximum movement speed and minimal Magicka penalties, enabling spellcasters to cast their spells more reliably and quickly.
Armor Types and Their Associated Skills
| Armor Type | Primary Skill | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy Armor | Heavy Armor | Highest physical defense, excellent for tanking. | Slows movement, sificant spellcasting penalties. |
| Medium Armor | Medium Armor | Balanced defense and mobility, moderate spellcasting impact. | Less defense than Heavy, less mobility than Light. |
| Light Armor | Light Armor | Highest mobility, minimal spellcasting penalties. | Lowest physical defense. |
Beyond the core armor skills, the Block skill is also crucial for defensive characters. A higher Block skill increases your chance to negate incoming melee damage when actively blocking with a shield or a two-handed weapon. Combining effective armor usage with a strong Block skill can make even lightly armored characters surprisingly survivable.
When choosing your armor specialization, consider your character's intended role. A warrior might favor Heavy Armor, a spellsword might opt for Medium Armor, and a pure mage might stick with Light Armor or even no armor at all to maximize Magicka efficiency.
