Leveling Up & Choosing Major/Minor Skills
Leveling up in Morrowind is intrinsically tied to the development of your chosen skills. Unlike many RPGs, simply gaining experience points doesn't directly level you up; instead, you must rest after improving your skills to trigger a level increase. Strategic selection of major and minor skills is paramount for efficient character progression.
When you create your character, you select a set of Major Skills and Minor Skills. Major skills increase more rapidly than minor skills, and reaching certain thresholds in your major skills is what allows you to level up. For example, if you choose 'Long Blade' as a major skill, every successful hit with a long blade will contribute sificantly to its progression. When you have increased your major skills enough times (typically 10 times across all your major skills), you will be prompted to rest to level up. Upon resting, you are presented with attribute increases based on how many times you improved your skills related to those attributes. For instance, improving Strength-related skills like Long Blade or Heavy Armor will grant bonuses to Strength. Maximizing these attribute gains is crucial for creating a powerful character.
The key to efficient leveling is to choose a set of major skills that synergize well and al with your chosen race and births. For a warrior, this might include weapon skills (e.g., Axe, Blunt Weapon, Long Blade), armor skills (Heavy Armor, Medium Armor), and combat utility skills (Block, Armorer). For a mage, focus on magic schools like Destruction, Mysticism, Alteration, and Conjuration, along with supporting skills like Willpower and Intelligence. Minor skills can be used to supplement your major skills or to develop complementary abilities. For example, a warrior might have Alchemy or Speechcraft as minor skills to provide utility outside of combat. It's often beneficial to have at least one skill from each attribute category as either a major or minor skill to ensure you can gain points in all attributes. Planning your skill progression from the outset will lead to a more optimized and powerful character, allowing you to tackle the challenges of Vvardenfell with greater ease.
