Skills & Abilities
Morrowind features a robust skill system that defines your character's capabilities in combat, magic, and social interactions. Improving these skills is paramount to overcoming the challenges of Vvardenfell. Each skill is tied to specific attributes and can be trained or improved through use.
Skills are broadly categorized into Combat, Magic, and General skills. Combat skills focus on weapon and armor usage, while Magic skills encompass the various schools of spellcasting. General skills cover a wide range of proficiencies, from stealth and speech to alchemy and enchanting.
Combat Skills
- Weapon Skills: Such as Long Blade, Axe, Blunt Weapon, Spear, Short Blade, and Marksman. Each weapon type has its own skill progression, affecting accuracy and damage.
- Armor Skills: Light Armor, Medium Armor, and Heavy Armor. Higher skill reduces damage taken and improves movement speed while wearing that armor type.
- Block: Increases your chance to block incoming melee attacks.
Magic Skills
These are the core of spellcasting in Morrowind, divided into six schools:
- Alteration: Manipulates the physical world (e.g., levitation, shield spells).
- Conjuration: Summons creatures, weapons, or armor.
- Destruction: Deals direct damage through elemental or magical attacks.
- Illusion: Affects the minds of others (e.g., charm, invisibility).
- Mysticism: Manipulates magical energies (e.g., spell absorption, teleportation).
- Restoration: Heals, cures, and provides protective wards.
General Skills
- Athletics: Affects running speed and fatigue.
- Enchant: Allows for the creation of enchanted items.
- Hand-to-Hand: Unarmed combat effectiveness.
- Heavy Armor, Light Armor, Medium Armor: As mentioned above.
- Lockpicking: Improves your ability to open locked chests and doors.
- Marksman: Bow and crossbow effectiveness.
- Merchant: Influences prices when buying and selling.
- Security: Affects trap disarming and lockpicking.
- Sneak: Your ability to move undetected.
- Speechcraft: Improves your chances of successful persuasion and intimidation.
Skill Improvement
Skills improve through successful use. For example, hitting an enemy with a sword increases your relevant weapon skill. You can also pay NPCs for training sessions to boost your skills faster. Reaching certain skill levels unlocks new abilities and spells.
Attributes and Skills
Your character's attributes (Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Endurance, Personality, Luck) directly influence the effectiveness and potential of your skills. For instance, Intelligence governs your Magicka pool, vital for spellcasters.
