Skills & Attributes Deep Dive
Morrowind's character progression is deeply tied to its attribute and skill system. Understanding how these elements interact is crucial for building a powerful character. Attributes are your core stats, influencing everything from your health to your magical reserves and combat effectiveness. Skills, on the other hand, represent your learned proficiencies in various disciplines, from combat to magic and stealth.
Your character's attributes are determined during creation based on your chosen race and class, but they can be further influenced by leveling up. There are eight primary attributes:
- Strength: Affects melee damage and encumbrance.
- Intelligence: Governs Magicka capacity.
- Willpower: Influences Magicka regeneration and resistance to mental effects.
- Endurance: Determines Health and Stamina.
- Personality: Affects disposition with NPCs and success in speechcraft.
- Agility: Influences hit chance with ranged and melee attacks, and evasion.
- Speed: Affects movement speed and attack speed.
- Luck: A universal modifier that slightly impacts all other attributes and skill checks.
Skills are divided into three main categories: Combat, Magic, and General. Each skill has a base rating, and using that skill in-game will increase its proficiency. Higher skill levels unlock new abilities, improve your chances of success, and increase the effectiveness of related actions. For example, a higher Blade skill will make your sword attacks more accurate and damaging.
When you level up, you gain attribute points to distribute. The number of points you receive is influenced by the skills you've used most effectively during the level. Focusing on a few key skills and attributes will generally lead to a more specialized and powerful character than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades.
Key Skills and Their Impact

Strategically choosing your starting skills and class, and then focusing your attribute increases and skill advancements, is the core of Morrowind's character progression. Experiment with different combinations to find a playstyle that suits you.
