Magic Skills
Morrowind's magic system is built around distinct schools of magic, each offering unique spells and abilities. Mastering these skills allows for incredible versatility, from devastating offensive spells to subtle manipulations of the mind and environment. Developing your magical prowess is a rewarding path.
The six schools of magic are Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, and Restoration. Each school has a set of spells that can be learned, bought, or even crafted. The effectiveness of these spells is tied to your character's relevant skill level and attributes like Intelligence and Willpower.
Schools of Magic and Their Applications
- Alteration: Spells like 'Feather' (reduces encumbrance), 'Water Walking', 'Shield', and 'Lockpicker' are invaluable for exploration and utility. Higher skill allows for stronger defensive buffs and environmental manipulation.
- Conjuration: Summoning Daedra, Elementals, or bound weapons and armor can provide crucial combat support or bypass difficult encounters. 'Summon Ancestral Ghost' is a common early-game summon.
- Destruction: The primary offensive school, featuring spells like 'Fireball', 'Frostbite', and 'Shock'. Effective use requires managing magicka and targeting enemy weaknesses.
- Illusion: Spells such as 'Charm', 'Calm Humanoid', 'Invisibility', and 'Night-Eye' can be used for social manipulation, stealth, or to avoid combat altogether.
- Mysticism: Essential for advanced magic users, Mysticism includes spells like 'Spell Absorption', 'Dispel Magic', 'Teleport', and 'Soul Trap'. It's also key for spellcrafting.
- Restoration: Crucial for survival, Restoration spells include 'Heal', 'Cure Poison', 'Fortify Attribute', and 'Wards'.
Learning and Improving Magic Skills
New spells can be purchased from Mages Guild members, alchemists, and other spell vendors. Some spells are quest rewards. Your skill in a school increases with successful casting. You can also pay NPCs for training to accelerate your progress.
Spellcrafting
The ability to craft custom spells is a hallmark of Morrowind. By visiting an Altar of Spellcrafting (found in certain Mages Guild halls and Telvanni towers), you can combine various magical effects into a single spell. This requires a high Mysticism skill and sificant magicka.
Key Spells and Their Uses
- 'Feather' (Alteration): Essential for carrying more loot.
- 'Summon Familiar' (Conjuration): A reliable early-game combat companion.
