Skills & Character Progression — The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Guide
Morrowind's character progression is a deep and rewarding system that hinges on the interplay between attributes and skills. Unlike many RPGs, your character doesn't automatically gain power simply by leveling up; instead, your growth is directly tied to the actions you perform in the game world. Mastering this system is key to creating a powerful and specialized character.
At the heart of character progression are Attributes and Skills. Attributes are your core stats, such as Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, and Agility, which influence your raw capabilities. Skills, on the other hand, represent your learned proficiencies in various disciplines, from combat and magic to stealth and speechcraft. Using a skill in the game world is the primary way to increase its level.
When you gain enough experience (by successfully using skills), you will level up. Upon leveling up, you are awarded points to distribute among your attributes. The number of attribute points you receive is determined by the efficiency of the skills you've used during that level. Skills marked with a red dot are your 'Major' skills, and using them effectively contributes more to your attribute gains upon leveling. Skills without a red dot are 'Minor' skills, which contribute less.
Character Creation: Your journey begins with character creation, where you choose your race, births, and class. Each race has inherent stat bonuses and resistances. Birthss offer unique passive abilities or starting attribute boosts. Classes provide a starting set of major and minor skills, influencing your early game and long-term development.
Skill Advancement: To improve a skill, you must actively use it. For example, to increase your Blade skill, you must attack enemies with swords. To increase your Destruction magic skill, you must cast destruction spells. The more you use a skill, the faster it will improve.
Attribute Increases: After leveling up, you'll have the opportunity to increase your attributes. The game calculates the 'efficiency' of your used skills during the level. For example, if you heavily used Blade and Block, you'll likely see sificant increases available for Strength and Endurance. This system encourages players to focus on specific skill sets to maximize their attribute gains.
Specialization: Morrowind rewards specialization. Trying to be proficient in every skill will result in a weaker character overall. Instead, focus on a few key skills that complement your chosen playstyle and race, and invest your attribute points accordingly. This focused approach will lead to a more powerful and satisfying character.
