Strongholds & Forts
Morrowind's landscape is dotted with numerous strongholds and forts, remnants of past conflicts and current military outposts. These structures range from ancient Dunmer strongholds to Imperial garrisons, each offering unique challenges, potential loot, and often serving as key locations for quests. Exploring these fortified locations can be a dangerous but rewarding undertaking.
These strongholds often serve as bases for various factions, including the Great Houses, the Imperial Legion, and bandit groups. They can be occupied by hostile forces, making them prime targets for combat-oriented characters, or they might house friendly NPCs who offer services, quests, or training. The architecture and purpose of these forts vary greatly, reflecting the cultures and eras from which they originate.
Notable types of strongholds and forts include:
- Imperial Forts: Scattered across Vvardenfell, these serve as bases for the Imperial Legion. They are typically well-defended and may contain Imperial soldiers, merchants, and quest givers. Examples include Fort Buckmoth and Fort Moonmoth.
- Dunmer Strongholds: Ancient structures built by the Dunmer, often carved into mountainsides or built with distinctive volcanic rock. Some are abandoned and filled with dangers, while others are still inhabited by Ashlander tribes or reclusive individuals.
- Bandit Camps and Hideouts: These are often less structured than official forts, consisting of makeshift camps or caves. They are usually populated by hostile bandits, smugglers, or pirates and are a good source of stolen goods and coin.
- Daedric Shrines and Ruins: While not strictly forts, these often function as fortified locations with defensive structures and guardians, serving as strongholds for Daedric cults.
When exploring these locations, be prepared for combat. Many forts are heavily guarded, and their interiors can be labyrinthine. Always ensure you have adequate supplies, including healing potions and repair items. Some forts may contain valuable loot, such as enchanted weapons, armor, or gold. Pay attention to quest markers, as many important objectives will lead you to these fortified locations.
