Companions & Followers
While Morrowind doesn't feature traditional party-based companions like some other Elder Scrolls titles, you can recruit certain NPCs to aid you in your journey. These allies can offer valuable combat support, carry some of your loot, and even provide unique dialogue. Understanding how to find, recruit, and manage these temporary companions is key to overcoming the challenges of Vvardenfell.
The most common way to acquire a follower is through quests. Many NPCs will offer their services after you complete a specific task for them or gain their trust. For example, certain members of the Fighters Guild or Mages Guild might be persuaded to join you for dangerous expeditions. these followers have their own inventories and combat styles, and their effectiveness can vary greatly. Some are skilled warriors, while others might be more adept at magic or ranged combat.
When recruiting a follower, consider their strengths and weaknesses in relation to your own character build. A heavily armored warrior might be a good tank for a spellcaster, while a nimble scout could provide valuable scouting and ranged support for a melee-focused character. You can often direct your followers to wait for you, follow you, or even engage in combat. Pay attention to their dialogue for clues about their motivations and any potential quests they might have.
Managing your follower's inventory is also crucial. They can help alleviate your carry weight burden, but they also have limitations. Some followers may refuse to carry certain items, or their inventory might become full. Regularly check their inventory and distribute items as needed. Remember that followers can be killed, so protect them during combat, especially if they are particularly useful to your playstyle. The loss of a valuable follower can be a sificant setback.
Here are some notable potential followers you might encounter:
- Fargoth: Found in Seyda Neen, he can be recruited after completing a small quest for him. He's a decent early-game follower with some combat ability.
- Mothron: A mage who can be found in Balmora. She offers magical support and can be a valuable asset against magical threats.
- Hlormar Wine-Sot: A warrior available in Balmora. He's a strong melee combatant and can draw enemy attention.
The availability and loyalty of followers can sometimes be influenced by your actions and reputation. Building good relationships with certain factions might unlock more reliable allies. Always be prepared for the possibility of losing a follower, and have a backup plan in place.
