Main Quest Progression — The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Guide

Follow this walkthrough for the Main Quest in Morrowind. Navigate the political and spiritual landscape of Vvardenfell from prisoner to savior.

Main Quest Progression

Welcome, Nerevarine-to-be! The Main Quest of Morrowind is a sprawling epic, guiding you from a humble prisoner to the prophesied savior of Vvardenfell. This section will provide a detailed, step-by-step walkthrough to ensure you navigate the complex political and spiritual landscape with ease. Remember, Vvardenfell is vast; don't be afraid to explore, but keep these objectives in mind.

Part 1: The Arrival and Initial Orders

1. Release from Prison

  • Location: Seyda Neen, Census and Excise Office.
  • Action: After character creation, speak with Socucius Ergalla. He will process your release papers.
  • Reward: Your release papers, 87 gold, and a package for Caius Cosades in Balmora.
  • Strategy: Before leaving the office, check the barrel and crates for minor loot. Outside, Fargoth's Ring is a good early quest for some easy gold and reputation with Arrille.

2. Report to Caius Cosades

  • Location: Balmora, Caius Cosades' House (located in the north-central part of the city, near the river).
  • Action: Travel to Balmora. The easiest way is to take the Silt Strider from Seyda Neen to Balmora (cost: 12 gold). Once there, find Caius Cosades and present him with the package.
  • Reward: 200 gold, a new rank within the Blades (Apprentice), and a set of common clothes.
  • Strategy: Caius will instruct you to "make a name for yourself" before he gives you further orders. This is your cue to join a guild (Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild) or a Great House (Redoran, Hlaalu, Telvanni) and complete some of their early quests. This will also help you gain valuable skills and equipment.

Part 2: Proving Your Worth

3. Faction Quests and Reputation

  • Objective: Gain at least one rank within a major faction (e.g., Fighters Guild, Mages Guild) or complete a few side quests to increase your reputation.
  • Strategy:
    • Fighters Guild (Balmora): Speak to Eydis Fire-Eye for initial contracts like "The Dwemer Ruins" or "The Code Book."
    • Mages Guild (Balmora): Talk to Ranis Athrys for tasks such as "Recruit a Mouth" or "Engage in Research."
    • Thieves Guild (Balmora, South Wall Cornerclub): Speak to Sugar-Lips Habasi for quests like "The Limeware Platter" or "The Diamond."
  • Important: Caius will not give you further main quest assignments until you have demonstrated some competence. Aim for at least level 3-5 and a few thousand gold before returning to him.

4. First Blades Assignment: Hasphat Antabolis

  • Location: Balmora, Fighters Guild.
  • Action: Once you've gained some experience, return to Caius Cosades. He will send you to Hasphat Antabolis, a trainer in the Balmora Fighters Guild, to retrieve information about the Nerevarine Prophecies.
  • Strategy: Hasphat will demand a favor in return: retrieve a Dwemer puzzle box from the Dwemer ruin of Arkngthand. Arkngthand is located east of Balmora, across the Odai River. Be prepared for Dwemer automatons (Centurions, Spheres) and traps.
  • Reward: Hasphat's notes on the Nerevarine Prophecies.

5. Second Blades Assignment: Sharn gra-Muzgob

  • Location: Balmora, Mages Guild.
  • Action: Caius will then direct you to Sharn gra-Muzgob, a scholar in the Balmora Mages Guild, for more information.
  • Strategy: Sharn will ask you to retrieve a skull from the ancestral tomb of the Andrano family. The Andrano Ancestral Tomb is located south of Balmora, past the Silt Strider port. Beware of undead creatures within.
  • Reward: Sharn's notes on the Nerevarine Prophecies.

6. Third Blades Assignment: Mehra Milo

  • Location: Vivec, Hall of Wisdom, Temple Canton.
  • Action: Your final information gathering task from Caius sends you to Mehra Milo, a librarian in the Vivec Temple.
  • Strategy: Travel to Vivec (Silt Strider from Balmora to Vivec, then navigate the cantons). Mehra Milo will be cautious and ask you to meet her in secret at the back of the library. She will provide you with two books: "The Seven Visions" and "Nerevar at Red Mountain."
  • Reward: The two prophetic books.

Part 3: The Path of the Nerevarine

7. The Dissident Priests

  • Location: Urshilaku Camp.
  • Action: After reviewing the information, Caius will instruct you to seek out the Dissident Priests. He'll give you a scroll with directions to the Urshilaku Camp, located in the Ashlands north of Ald'ruhn.
  • Strategy: This journey is significant. Consider stocking up on healing potions, cure disease potions, and possibly some levitation or jump spells/scrolls. The Ashlands are dangerous, filled with cliff racers, ash creatures, and blighted beasts. Follow the directions carefully, or use a Mark/Recall spell to set a convenient return point.
  • Reward: Further understanding of the Nerevarine Prophecies and the first steps toward becoming a true Nerevarine.
