Skills & Magic

Master Morrowind's magic system by developing skills across Alteration, Destruction, Illusion, and other schools to craft custom spells.

Skills & Magic

Morrowind's magic system is deep and versatile, allowing players to develop a wide range of magical abilities. Skills are improved through use and by training with masters. Understanding the different schools of magic and how they interact is vital for any aspiring mage.

Magic in Morrowind is divided into several schools, each with its own set of spells and effects. These include Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, and Restoration. You can also develop skills in weapon proficiencies, armor types, and various other disciplines.

Schools of Magic

  • Alteration: Spells that manipulate the physical world, such as opening locks, levitating, or increasing attributes.
  • Conjuration: Spells that summon creatures, weapons, or bound armor to aid the player.
  • Destruction: Offensive spells that deal direct damage, such as fireballs, frost bolts, and shockwaves.
  • Illusion: Spells that affect the minds of others, causing fear, charm, or invisibility.
  • Mysticism: Spells that manipulate magical energies, such as absorbing magicka, dispelling enchantments, or teleportation.
  • Restoration: Spells that heal, cure ailments, or provide protective wards.

Skill Progression

Skills increase as you successfully use them. For example, casting Destruction spells will improve your Destruction skill. You can also pay NPCs to train your skills, which is often faster but more expensive. Reaching certain skill levels unlocks new abilities and allows you to cast more powerful spells.

Attributes and Skills

Your character's attributes (Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, etc.) influence the effectiveness of your skills. For instance, a high Intelligence attribute will increase your maximum Magicka, making it easier to cast spells. Similarly, a high Strength attribute will boost your melee damage.

Spellcrafting

A unique feature of Morrowind is the ability to craft your own spells. By visiting an Altar of Spellcrafting, you can combine various magical effects into a custom spell, provided you have the necessary skill and magicka.

  • Requirements: High Mysticism skill and access to an Altar of Spellcrafting.
  • Process: Select desired effects, choose a magnitude and duration, and name your spell.
  • Cost: Spellcrafting consumes a sificant amount of magicka and gold.
