Skills & Magic

Oblivion features a robust skill system that governs your character's proficiencies in various areas, from combat and stealth to magic and crafting. Developing these skills is central to character progression, unlocking new abilities, and becoming more effective in the world. Magic, in particular, is a deep and versatile system with multiple schools to master.

Your character's skills are divided into three main categories: Combat, Magic, and Stealth. Each skill has a rating that increases as you use it. Using a skill associated with a Major Skill will contribute to leveling up your character. Minor Skills also increase, but at a slower rate and do not directly contribute to overall level progression.

Combat Skills: These skills focus on direct confrontation. They include weapon proficiencies like Blade, Blunt, and Hand to Hand, as well as defensive skills like Block and Armor (Heavy and Light). Improving these skills increases your damage output, defense, and ability to withstand attacks.

Magic Skills: As detailed in the Magic System section, these skills encompass the five schools of magic: Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Mysticism, and Conjuration. Each school allows you to cast spells with unique effects, and proficiency in each school unlocks more powerful spells and increases casting efficiency.

Stealth Skills: These skills are for characters who prefer to avoid direct confrontation. They include Sneak, for remaining undetected; Lockpicking, for opening chests and doors; and Speechcraft, for influencing NPCs. Archery also often falls into this category, allowing for ranged attacks from a distance.

Skill Trainers: For players who wish to accelerate their skill development, trainers are available in various cities. These NPCs can increase your skill level by a set amount for a fee. Higher-level trainers are often found in major cities or associated with specific guilds.

Skill Books: Scattered throughout Cyrodiil are Skill Books, which, when read, permanently increase the associated skill by one point. Finding these books can provide a sificant boost to your character's development.

Magic in Detail:

  • Spellcasting: Spells consume Magicka. Your Magicka pool is determined by your Intelligence attribute and can be restored through potions or resting.
  • Spellmaking: At the Arcane University, you can combine spell effects from different schools to create custom spells, offering immense flexibility.
  • Enchanting: Using Soul Gems, you can imbue items with permanent magical effects, further enhancing your character's capabilities.

Choosing your Major Skills wisely during character creation is crucial, as they directly influence your leveling speed. However, any skill can be developed through use, allowing for diverse character builds regardless of your initial choices.
