The magical arts are a powerful tool in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and expanding your spellbook is key to overcoming many of the game's challenges. Whether you're a dedicated sorcerer or a warrior seeking utility spells, understanding the various methods of acquiring new magic is essential for your journey through Cyrodiil.

The most straightforward way to acquire spells is by purchasing them from Spell Merchants. These vendors are typically found within the Mages Guild halls located in each of the major cities. Each Mages Guild branch tends to specialize in certain schools of magic, so visiting different locations will offer a wider variety of spells.

The six schools of magic in Oblivion are:

• Destruction: Deals direct damage through elemental effects like fire, frost, and shock.
• Restoration: Focuses on healing, curing diseases and poisons, and providing protective wards.
• Alteration: Manipulates the physical world, offering spells for lockpicking, water breathing, shield effects, and more.
• Illusion: Affects the minds of targets, enabling invisibility, calming enemies, or inducing fear.
• Conjuration: Summons creatures to fight for you, conjures weapons and armor, or creates magical barriers.
• Mysticism: Deals with manipulating magical energies, including spell absorption, telekinesis, and damage spell effects.

Once a spell is purchased, it is immediately learned and added to your spell list. You can then cast it using your magicka reserves. The effectiveness and cost of a spell are influenced by your skill level in the corresponding school and your character's Intelligence and Willpower attributes.

Beyond merchants, spells can also be found as rewards for completing quests, particularly those undertaken for the Mages Guild or certain Daedric Princes. In rare instances, you might discover Spell Tomes within dungeons or ancient ruins. Reading a Spell Tome will permanently teach you the spell it contains, functioning similarly to purchasing it from a merchant.
