Choose a Side

Decide the fate of Skyrim. Weigh the Stormcloak rebellion against the Imperial Legion. Understand their motives before choosing a side in the Civil War.

Choosing Your Allegiance: Stormcloaks or Imperials

The Civil War questline in Skyrim presents the Dragonborn with a monumental decision: which side to support in the ongoing conflict between the Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion. This choice will have profound consequences for the province of Skyrim, its people, and the overall narrative of your playthrough. Understanding the motivations and ideologies of each faction is crucial before making your commitment.

The Stormcloaks:

Led by Ulfric Stormcloak, the Stormcloaks are a rebellion fighting for Skyrim's independence from the Aldmeri Dominion and the Empire. Their primary grievances include the Empire's ban on Talos worship, a deeply held religious practice among Nords, and the perceived weakness of the Empire in appeasing the Dominion. The Stormcloaks champion Nord traditions, culture, and soverety, believing that Skyrim should govern itself without fore interference.

The Imperial Legion:

The Imperial Legion, on the other hand, represents the established authority of the Empire of Tamriel. They seek to maintain the unity of the Empire, believing that a strong, unified front is the only way to resist the growing threat of the Aldmeri Dominion. The Imperials uphold the White-Gold Concordat, the treaty that led to the ban on Talos worship, seeing it as a necessary sacrifice for peace and stability. They view the Stormcloaks as dangerous rebels who threaten to plunge Skyrim into further chaos.

Making Your Choice:

The decision to join the Stormcloaks or the Imperials is made early in the Civil War questline, after you have participated in a council meeting with both factions. You will be presented with an opportunity to declare your allegiance. This choice is permanent for that playthrough, so consider carefully:

  • Stormcloak Path: If you believe in Nord independence, the freedom to worship Talos, and a Skyrim for the Nords, the Stormcloaks are your choice. This path often leads to more direct, aggressive combat scenarios and a focus on liberating Skyrim's holds.
  • Imperial Path: If you prioritize the unity of Tamriel, believe in the necessity of the White-Gold Concordat for survival against the Dominion, and see the Empire as the best hope for order, then the Imperial Legion is your path. This path may involve more strategic maneuvering and upholding Imperial law.

The First Battle:

Regardless of your choice, your first major engagement in the Civil War will likely be the Battle for Fort Greymoor (Imperial) or the Battle for Fort Hraggstad (Stormcloak). These battles serve as a baptism by fire, introducing you to large-scale combat and the tactics employed by each side. You will fight alongside your chosen faction's soldiers, pushing back the enemy and securing territory.

Consequences of Your Choice:

Your allegiance will determine which Jarls rule in each hold, which soldiers patrol the roads, and which faction you fight for in subsequent battles. The political landscape of Skyrim will shift dramatically based on your decision. Ultimately, the goal of both factions is to defeat the other and claim control of Skyrim, but their methods and visions for the future are starkly different.
